Chaos Strikes Back

Chaos Strikes Back is the sequel to Dungeon Master. Firestaff supports CSB startup, data detection, menus, HUD work, and runtime paths while compatibility is still being hardened against the original sources.

How to Play

Start Firestaff, choose Chaos Strikes Back, then press Start. Use the startup screens to reach the game and continue from the available CSB entry flow. CSB is harder and less linear than DM1, so expect faster danger and more maze-like progression.

Controls

  • F1 to F4: open champion inventories.
  • Ctrl+S: open the CSB disk/save menu. Escape freezes/unfreezes.
  • Return: accept or wake the party while resting.
  • Up / Down: move forward/back. Left / Right: strafe.
  • Insert / Home, Q / E, or Home / End: turn left/right.
  • W, A, S, D: Firestaff movement aliases.
  • F10: live graphics scale control.
  • Mouse: interact with inventory, doors, wall objects, spell runes, champion areas, and action buttons.
  • Controller/Steam Deck: map movement to arrows and shoulder buttons to Q and E.

Game Data

Put your legally owned Chaos Strikes Back files under:

~/.firestaff/data/csb/

Firestaff scans by hash and can find supported files inside folders or supported containers. A dedicated csb folder is still recommended.

CSB usually needs matching original graphics and dungeon files. Optional title, intro, and utility data are used when present.

Saves

Use Firestaff's save handling from inside the game where available. Keep original CSB files separate from Firestaff saves.

Notes

CSB startup, title, PRESENTS, CHAOS/STRIKES, HUD, and door presentation are active areas. If a build shows a broken title sequence or missing entrance behavior, report the platform, data version, and whether the files were loose or inside an archive.
