Controls

Dungeon Master (PC 3.4-compatible)

Original interface keys:

  • 1 to 4: open the corresponding champion inventory.
  • Ctrl+S: open the original save-game route.
  • Escape: freeze or unfreeze the game.

Movement:

  • Up / Down: forward / backward.
  • Left / Right: strafe left / right.
  • Home / End, Q / E, or keypad 4 / 6: turn left / right.
  • Keypad 5, 2, 1, 3: forward, backward, strafe left, strafe right.
  • WASD: the same movement as the arrow keys.

Firestaff additions:

  • Shift+1 to Shift+6: spell runes. This avoids conflicting with the original 1 to 4 champion controls.
  • F5 / F9: quick save / quick load.
  • F10: live graphics scale control. It intentionally remains assigned to graphics rather than an original game command.
  • F11: toggle fullscreen. F12: screenshot.

Chaos Strikes Back (PC-compatible)

  • F1 to F4: open the corresponding champion inventory.
  • Ctrl+S: open the CSB disk/save menu.
  • Escape: freeze or unfreeze the game.
  • Return: accept or wake the party while resting.
  • Insert / Home: turn left / right.
  • Up / Down: forward / backward.
  • Left / Right: strafe left / right.
  • WASD, Q / E, and Home / End are Firestaff movement aliases.

Game menus and startup screens can also use keyboard selection where supported.

DM2: Skullkeep

DM2 shares the same core control scheme as DM1:

  • 1 to 4: open champion inventories.
  • Escape: freeze or unfreeze the game.
  • Arrow keys, WASD, keypad: movement and strafing (same bindings as DM1).
  • Q / E or Home / End: turn left / right.
  • F5 / F9: quick save / quick load.
  • F11: toggle fullscreen. F12: screenshot.

DM2-specific notes:

  • The outdoor/indoor map transition is automatic; no special key is needed.
  • The DM2 spell system uses the same Shift+1 to Shift+6 rune shortcuts.
  • DM2 has additional HUD elements (weather, map indicators) that respond to mouse clicks in the viewport area.

Dungeon Master Nexus

Nexus uses the same keyboard/mouse controls as DM1 within Firestaff. The original Saturn game was played with the Sega Saturn controller and had no mouse support.

  • Arrow keys, WASD, keypad: movement (same as DM1).
  • Q / E or Home / End: turn left / right.
  • 1 to 4: champion inventories.
  • Escape: freeze or unfreeze.
  • F5 / F9: quick save / quick load.
  • F11: toggle fullscreen. F12: screenshot.

Note: The original Saturn game did not support mouse input. In Firestaff, mouse and touch input are mapped to the viewport and menus as with other games.

Theron's Quest

Theron's Quest uses the same keyboard/mouse controls as DM1 within Firestaff. The original PC Engine game used a gamepad.

  • Arrow keys, WASD, keypad: movement (same as DM1).
  • Q / E or Home / End: turn left / right.
  • 1 to 4: champion inventories.
  • Escape: freeze or unfreeze.
  • F5 / F9: quick save / quick load.
  • F11: toggle fullscreen. F12: screenshot.

Theron's Quest is a single-champion game. Champion inventory keys 2 to 4 are not used during normal gameplay.

Mouse and Touch

Firestaff maps mouse and touch input to the game viewport, menus, inventory, and startup screens where the active game supports those interactions. Click targets match the original game's screen regions.

Controller

Controller support is active work. Current builds may rely on Steam Input, desktop controller mapping, or keyboard emulation depending on platform.

For Steam Deck, use Steam Input to map the Deck controls to keyboard commands until Firestaff's in-app controller mapping panel is complete. See Steam Deck for details.
