Waveshare ESP32-C5-Touch-LCD-3.5 — Coming Soon

CYM support is planned for the Waveshare ESP32-C5-Touch-LCD-3.5 as a dedicated ws-c5-35 target. It is not supported yet and there is no CYM binary or web-flasher selector for it. Do not flash the existing WS-C5-28 image onto this board.

Jim has ordered SKU 35419 / ESP32-C5-Touch-LCD-3.5-C, supplied with the BF3901 camera and a 3.7 V lithium battery.[1] The exact PCB revision will be recorded when the unit arrives.

Confirmed hardware

Waveshare documents the following component inventory for this board family and SKU.[1][2]

Resource Board hardware Port implication
SoC/module ESP32-C5-WROOM-1U with external FPC dual-band antenna Shared ESP32-C5 CYM application, 2.4/5 GHz Wi-Fi, BLE 5, and IEEE 802.15.4 remain applicable
Memory 32 MB flash, 8 MB PSRAM Supports CYM and partial LVGL draw buffers
Display ST7796, SPI, 320×480 IPS Dedicated panel initialization, geometry, rotations, and throughput testing
Touch FT6336 capacitive touch, I2C Dedicated touch backend and orientation transforms
Power AXP2101 PMIC and rechargeable-battery support Dedicated rail, charge, battery, backlight, PWR-button, and shutdown handling
Helper controller CH32V006 I/O expander Architecturally similar to WS-C5-28's helper MCU, but its protocol must be verified independently
Storage TF/microSD slot Bus mapping and safe board-specific rate require C5 source/hardware proof
Sensors QMI8658 IMU, PCF85063 RTC, SHTC3 temperature/humidity Enabled individually after bus and hardware verification
Audio ES8311 codec, NS4150B amplifier, microphone and speaker connector Kept gated until mapped and tested
Camera BF3901 fitted on SKU 35419 Camera pin ownership must be conflict-free even if CYM does not initially enable the camera
Expansion 32-pin 2.54 mm header with UART and I2C The UART header is the intended CYM GPS connection

The 320×480 panel contains twice the pixels of a 240×320 panel. One RGB565 full-screen image is 307,200 bytes, so the design retains partial DMA-capable LVGL buffers rather than depending on two full-screen buffers.

What makes it different from WS-C5-28

WS-C5-28 uses a 240×320 ST7789 display, CST3530 touch, and CH32V003 helper controller. The planned WS-C5-35 uses a 320×480 ST7796 display, FT6336 touch, AXP2101 PMIC, and CH32V006 helper controller. It therefore gets a separate board identifier, pin profile, controller backends, package, manifest, and eventual web-flasher entry.

The shared ESP32-C5 application, radio features, capture formats, menus, and feature screens will remain common. Board-specific behavior will remain behind board_hal so existing released firmware is not changed by assumptions made for this board.

GPS and expansion header

Waveshare's order-page board label shows external TX, RX, SCL, SDA, power, ground, GPIO/ADC, reset/power, and E8–E15 helper-controller signals.[1] This confirms that UART GPS must remain available on the new board.

The order page does not state the ESP32 GPIO numbers behind TX/RX. The board profile will use the exact C5 schematic/BSP or measurements from Jim's board. WS-C5-28's GPIO11/GPIO12 assignment will not be copied by assumption.

Arrival and acceptance plan

Before implementation, preserve the official C5 schematic/BSP, exact SKU/PCB revision, GPIO ownership, CH32V006 protocol, AXP2101 rails, and controller initialization data. Then qualify:

  1. USB flashing, RESET, BOOT, PWR, and cold boot.
  2. ST7796 colors, clipping, full-screen operation, redraw timing, and all four rotations.
  3. FT6336 touch accuracy and all four orientation transforms.
  4. Classic and Modern navigation and representative 320×480 feature screens.
  5. TF-card read/write/remount and capture persistence.
  6. External UART GPS at the board header.
  7. 2.4/5 GHz Wi-Fi, BLE, IEEE 802.15.4, and ESP-NOW.
  8. AXP2101 battery/charge/backlight/shutdown and USB/battery transitions.
  9. RTC, IMU, SHTC3, audio, and camera coexistence before enabling each capability.
  10. Reboot/power-cycle testing and a bounded stability soak.

The complete engineering sequence is tracked in the CYM repository at docs/superpowers/plans/2026-09-27-waveshare-c5-touch-lcd-35-support.md. Compilation alone will not qualify the board.
