Fighting Bosses

World bosses are raid fights. They have a lot of health, several skills with warnings, and phases that make them faster and stronger as they lose health.

Phases

Most bosses have three phases. At certain health levels the boss bar changes colour, a message appears, and the boss uses its skills more often and hits harder. The exact thresholds are on each boss page.

More players, stronger boss

When more players fight, the boss gets more health and deals more damage – by default +45% health and +8% damage for every extra player, up to 8 players. A player counts while they fought the boss within 96 blocks in the last 45 seconds.

Rules of the arena

Bosses are built to be fought in the open, not cheesed.

  • Stay close. The arena reaches 64 blocks around the place the boss appeared. A boss lured further away heals and is teleported back after 20 seconds. While all players are outside the arena – for example on a pillar – the boss heals as well.
  • The boss heals during the whole fight – 1 health per second plus 0.5 for every player, starting 10 seconds after it appears. Your group has to deal more damage than that.
  • Combat pressure. Every few seconds the boss hurts players close to it a little and gives short debuffs. The more players, the stronger it gets.
  • Mace hits are capped at 18 damage, and Astrael blocks every third mace hit. A single lucky mace smash does not end a boss fight.

Rewards

When the boss dies, every player who fought it within its reward radius gets their own rewards:

  • the boss's element (Overworld bosses) or its trophy (realm bosses),
  • a raid cache – see Raid Caches. The boss shards do not drop directly: they only come out of raid caches that roll rare, epic or legendary,
  • XP,
  • materials for the next step: Worldbreaker Dust, a Primordial Spark, Primordium or Shadow Fragments.

If nobody is close enough when the boss dies, the rewards drop on the ground. With the PartyLink mod, party members near the boss share the rewards – see Installation.

Challenges

Every Overworld boss has two challenge advancements: win within 5 minutes of the summoning, and win without wearing any armor during the whole fight. See Advancements.
