Floating windows
Some windows simply shouldn't be tiled. Plaid lets you pick which ones float freely above the tiled layout.
Add an app to Float classes in settings and every window it opens stays floating. Good candidates:
- Settings and preferences windows
- Popups and dialogs
- Apps you'd rather not have reorganized (media players, drawing tools)
Some apps open specific windows that deserve special treatment. Add the exact window title to Float titles — the title as it appears on the window. You can also use a * wildcard, like Steam Settings, or Steam * to match anything starting with "Steam".
Use the floating picker shortcut (Super + Ctrl + Shift + F) to click any window and add it to the float list right then and there — no digging through settings.
Some apps have windows that are meant to be small — Steam's friends list is a classic example. If a window keeps shrinking to a sliver inside the tiling layout, add it under Minimum sizes (format: Title:WIDTHxHEIGHT) so it keeps a sensible size while tiled.
Steam occasionally pops up sale ads, update notices, and surveys. These are fixed-size popup windows, and Plaid recognizes that signature automatically — they float on top instead of distorting your tiling layout. No setup needed, and it works for the main window too: Steam's main window and friends list stay tiled at comfortable minimums.
