App profiles
Games gives one game or app its own settings: the screen it opens on, the bottom screen, performance, fan, refresh rate, combos, the Back button, the input layer, controls, stick lights and its guide.
(This page used to be called App profiles.)
Nothing changes unless you set it. Everything you don't touch stays as usual. (One exception: Firefox and browsers built on it move to the other screen by reopening there — see below.)
Wayfinder → Games.
Apps are shown as tiles in three groups:
- ON THE SCREENS NOW
- GAMES AND EMULATORS
- OTHER APPS
In each group, apps you already set up come first. Use Find an app… to search by name.
Each tile shows what's set for that app (for example "Opens on the bottom screen · Performance high · Own lights"), or Default when nothing is set.
Press an app. A window opens. Press Done (or B) to close it.
At first, the window shows only what you changed for this app. To see everything, press Change something for app at the bottom of the window. Press Show only what's changed to go back to the short view.
The settings are in groups. The screen and performance are on the left; the controller, lights and guide are on the right.
| Setting | Choices | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Opens on | Any screen (default) / Top / Bottom | The screen this app always opens on. See Two screens. |
| When it moves to the other screen | Automatic (default) / Keep running / Reopen | How this app moves when you move or swap it. See below. |
| The controller when app moves | Usual (default) / Goes with it / Stays | When you move or swap this app (hold Back), the controller goes with it to its new screen, or stays where it is. Usual follows Controller → Goes with a game you move. Also in the game: Home + X → More. See The controller. |
| Bottom screen while app is on top | Usual (default) / Keep on / Off | Off turns the bottom screen off when this app comes to the top screen. Keep on keeps it on (and stops the "turn it off when unused" timer). |
| Setting | Choices | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Performance | Usual / Standard / Medium / High | Usual = your AYN setting. Not shown with ClusterTune or Pulse installed (see below). |
| Fan | Usual / Off / Quiet / Smart / Sports / Custom | |
| Refresh rate | Usual / 60 Hz / 120 Hz | |
| Frame-rate counter | Usual / Shown / Hidden | Show or hide the FPS counter for this app. |
| Setting | Choices | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Wayfinder combos | Normal / Custom / Off | Normal = your usual combos. Custom = combos just for this app (press Edit ›). Off = no Wayfinder combos here: all buttons go to the app. |
| Back button | Automatic / Wayfinder / The game | Who gets the controller's Back button in this app (see below). |
| Input layer | Automatic / On / Off | Off = this app gets the Thor's own controller, for games that don't like the copy (see below). |
| Game controls | Open Game controls › | This app's buttons, face buttons, gyro, macros. See Game controls. Always shown. |
| Setting | Choices | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Stick lights | Usual / Own | Own = this app has its own lights (press Edit ›). See Stick lights. Not shown when Stick lights is turned off in Features. |
| Guide & notes on the bottom screen | Off / Guide & notes | Opens the guide with this app. Open now › opens it right away. See Guide & notes. |
If games inside this app (an emulator) have their own controls, they're listed at the bottom of the window: Games in app with their own controls. Press one to open its Game controls.
ClusterTune or Pulse installed: Wayfinder leaves the CPU to it, so the two never fight:
- no per-game Performance (here, in Game controls → Performance › and in Keep for game);
- the quick panel's Performance tile shows the tuner's name and changes nothing (AYN's Medium and High raise the CPU's minimum speeds: above the tuner's limits, the CPU would sit pinned at them, hotter);
- with Pulse, the per-game fan and refresh rate stand down too.
Use the tuner's own profiles; everything else in Wayfinder works as usual. Nothing is deleted: if the tuner is uninstalled, your choices come back.
Other apps that do the same job as a part of Wayfinder — when one is active, the Hub says so once, with what to do:
| App | What both do | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Mjolnir | The Home button | Use one for Home: turn Mjolnir's Home routing off, or move Wayfinder's Home combos to another button. |
| BiFrost | The stick lights | Wayfinder's Stick lights → AYN default, or turn BiFrost off. |
| OdinTools | Performance and the fan per app | Leave Wayfinder's games on Usual, or turn OdinTools' app overrides off. |
| SleepManager | Sleep and the lid | Handled: Wayfinder's sleep actions stay off unless you turn them on. See Sleep & battery. |
Help & status → Other apps on this Thor lists every one found, handled or not; press one to open the page where it's set.
Normally Wayfinder uses the controller's Back button (hold = move / swap, double = recent apps…).
When the input layer runs for the app, Wayfinder shares Back with the game:
- a short Back reaches the game as the controller's own Back button,
- Back pressed while you hold another button (for example Select + Back, RetroArch's menu) goes straight to the game,
- hold Back, double-tap and triple-tap stay Wayfinder's (hold = move / swap).
Back button setting:
- Automatic (default) — as above while the input layer runs. Without the input layer: for RetroArch, Back goes to RetroArch when RetroArch's own settings use Back for a hotkey or the menu; for other apps, Wayfinder keeps Back.
- Wayfinder — Wayfinder's Back (its taps, hold and combos).
- The game — Back goes to the app (held too), and no Back combos work in this app.
The input layer gives games a copy of the controller (see The controller). A few games don't react well to the copy.
Input layer:
- Automatic (default) — what the Controller page says: Everywhere, Only games I set up or Nowhere.
- On — the layer runs for this app, whatever the setting for other apps.
- Off — this app gets the Thor's own controller. Its Game controls then do nothing (the line under Game controls says "Input layer off — these do nothing").
The same choice is in the game: Home + X → More › → Input layer for app.
Most apps keep running when Wayfinder moves them to the other screen. A few don't like it: Firefox, and browsers built on Firefox, could crash after a move as soon as you selected a word or opened a menu. So these browsers move by reopening on the other screen instead: the app closes and opens again there, and your tabs come back.
When it moves to the other screen:
- Automatic (default) — Firefox-based browsers reopen; every other app keeps running.
- Keep running — the app moves live, like other apps.
- Reopen — the app closes and opens again on the other screen. Try it for an app that misbehaves after a move.
The line above the choice says what happens for this app: "…it keeps running", or "…it reopens there (tabs and state reload)". For a Firefox-based browser on Automatic, it adds "(automatic: Firefox-based browsers reopen)".
This is for when you move or swap the app (Hold Back, or the Move / swap apps tile). Reopening needs the Thor's system service (see More → Help & status → System access); without it, the app moves live.
Some apps need the controller's Home and Back for themselves. You can turn Wayfinder's combos off for that app only:
- Wayfinder → Games → the app.
- If you don't see Wayfinder combos, press Change something for app.
- Under Wayfinder combos, choose Off. The line above it says "Wayfinder combos: off (all buttons go to app)".
In that app, Home and Back now do what Android normally does, and no Wayfinder combo runs there. Other apps keep your combos. If you hold Home in that app, a hint reminds you: "Wayfinder's button combos are off in app". Choose Normal again to get your combos back.
Only Back? Set Back button to The game instead (see above): Wayfinder keeps its Home combos, and Back goes to the app.
When each screen has an app with a profile:
- Performance and fan: the more demanding one wins.
- Buttons and stick lights: the app that has the controller.
- Bottom screen: the app on top decides.
Games inside an emulator can each have their own controls, performance, fan, refresh rate, bottom screen, frame-rate counter and lights. Start the game and press Home + X: it opens that game's own controls. See Game controls.
The app's tile then shows "N game profile(s)".
You can also save a game's performance, fan, refresh rate and bottom screen right from the Quick panel with Keep for game.
At the top of the Games page: Import controls — load controls someone shared with you (a file). You see what the file contains before anything is saved. See Game controls.
