Light

New in 0.2.0. Part of the ambience: daylight through the windows, moonlight at night and the colored halos of your lamps, computed from Home Assistant (sun.sun, the home coordinates, the weather, your shutters and lights). No image to prepare, no external service.

Day Night
Daylight in the demo apartment: sun patches and sky light behind the windows Night in the demo apartment: moonlight and colored lamp halos

Turning it on

On by default as soon as ambience exists. north matters: it turns the sun and the moon.

ambience:
north: 45 # where north points, degrees clockwise from the top of the plan
light: true # default; false = off
  # light: {sun: true, moon: sensor.moon_phase, lamps: true}

Only window openings and glazed doors (glazed) with an outside side let daylight in, inside a room.

What is drawn

Light When What you see
Sky light by day, every window not closed A beam that widens into the room, brightest against the glass, blurred with depth (sky_diffusion), plus a faint light over the whole room. Weaker when overcast, fades in at dusk
Sun windows facing the sun A soft-edged patch on the floor: direction from the sun's azimuth + north, length from its elevation, shortened by the linked shutter, clipped to the room
Bounced light around sun and moon patches A warm glow around the patch
Between rooms by day A lit room lights the next one through an open inside door or an interior glass wall, fainter, one step only (doors)
Moon at night Direction and phase computed from the HA coordinates and the time: a cool patch behind the windows that see it, a night-sky glow through the others. Stronger near full moon
Lamps light on Halos (badges with halo) in the lamp's color and brightness, blending where they overlap, kept inside their room

Adjoining leaves (same bay, same group, or in line and touching) form one bay with one patch.

Settings

Key Values Default Meaning
sun true / false / 0–2 true Direct sun patch strength; false = no daylight at all
sky true / false / 0–2 true Sky light strength
bounce true / false / 0–2 true Bounced glow strength
sky_diffusion 0–1 0.6 0 = a sharp beam, 1 = a wide blur growing with the depth
sky_kelvin · sun_kelvin auto / 1800–10000 auto Color temperature of the sky light · of the sun patch (auto: golden near sunset)
moon true / false / sensor.* true Moonlight; a moon phase sensor gives the phase (else computed)
doors open / closed open An inside door without a sensor counts as open (closed: as closed) for the light between rooms
lamps true / false true Colored lamp halos
ambience:
  light:
    sky: 1.6
    bounce: 1.6
    sun: 1.3
    sky_diffusion: 0.8
    sky_kelvin: 5000
    sun_kelvin: 3200

Windows and doors

Per opening, all optional (see Drawing the plan › Openings):

Key Meaning
outside Required for daylight: the outside side of the window
sill · height Bottom and top of the glazing in cm. Default 90 and 215; a window 180 cm wide or more goes down to the floor
glazed Door only: full (glazed full height, 0–215 cm) or top (small pane, 150–200 cm). Lets daylight in like a window
overhang · overhang_height Roof overhang depth and its height above the glazing (cm): cuts the high summer sun, lets the low winter sun in
slats With a shutter: tilt (light follows current_tilt_position) or vented (a closed shutter lets thin streaks through)
bay Same name on each leaf: one bay, one patch
openings:
  - type: door
    seg: [300, 600, 390, 600]
    name: Garden door
    outside: [0, 1]
    glazed: full
    shutter: cover.garden_door_shutter
    slats: tilt
    overhang: 80

A glazed door letting daylight into the room

Weather

With ambience.weather, its cloud_coverage grades the direct sun (10 % or less = full sun, 90 % or more = none), else its condition; rain, fog and snow remove it. Clouds, fog and rain are painted on outdoor areas only, never over indoor rooms.

Ambience and animations › Light tab: sliders for Sky light (with Diffusion), Bounced light, Direct sun (0 to 200 %), Sky color and Sun color (with Auto), Doors without a sensor are open. A sample room (a bay with a shutter facing south, a window facing east, a lamp) previews them at any preview time and preview weather: nothing is saved. ⚙ Settings › Display › Light links to this tab. Tips

  • No light at all? Check north, the opening's outside and its type (a solid door lets nothing in). Clean up the plan can set the missing outside sides (Clean up the plan).
  • Too strong or too pale? Change sky / bounce / sun before ambience.intensity, which also changes the night tint.
  • Beam edges too visible? Raise sky_diffusion.
  • The light is static (no animation), redrawn only when the sun moves by a degree, a shutter, the moon phase or a lamp changes: no cost on a wall tablet.
