Languages & Settings

Languages

The UI ships in 15 languages:

English (US) English (UK) French
German Spanish Italian
Polish Portuguese (Portugal) Portuguese (Brazil)
Russian Turkish Japanese
Korean Chinese (Simplified) Chinese (Traditional)

On first run PCEdit follows the operating system's language; if that language is not one of the 15, it falls back to English (US). Change it any time from the language picker in the nav pane — the whole UI re-renders immediately, no restart, and the choice is remembered.

Note

Everything except English is AI-translated and has not been reviewed by a native speaker. Corrections are very welcome — open an issue or a pull request. See Localization for how the string catalog works.

CJK text shows as empty boxes

The bundled UI fonts have no Chinese / Japanese / Korean glyphs; PCEdit relies on the operating system's font fallback. Windows and macOS ship those fonts. On Linux, install your distro's Noto CJK package:

sudo apt install fonts-noto-cjk # Debian / Ubuntu
sudo dnf install google-noto-sans-cjk-fonts # Fedora
sudo zypper install noto-sans-cjk-fonts # openSUSE
sudo pacman -S noto-fonts-cjk # Arch

They are not bundled because Noto CJK is tens of megabytes per weight — it would double the download for everyone.

Settings file

PCEdit stores exactly three things: your chosen UI language, whether you have acknowledged the disclaimer, and (since v1.7.0) how the Inventories page shows identical items.

Platform Path
Windows %AppData%\PCEdit\settings.json
Linux / macOS ~/.config/PCEdit/settings.json

It is small, human-readable JSON. Delete it to reset PCEdit to a first-run state — the disclaimer will show again, the language returns to following the OS, and identical items go back to Automatic. A value PCEdit cannot read falls back to its default.

The only other thing PCEdit writes outside your save folder is the copy it keeps of a save from before it first edited it, in a separate folder — see FAQ & Troubleshooting. Beyond those two, nothing is persisted: no window layout, no recent-files list, no telemetry. PCEdit does not phone home and does not need a network connection — and since v1.4.3 neither does building it from source.

The disclaimer

Shown once on first run, and again if the disclaimer text itself is materially revised (the acknowledgement records which version you accepted). It was revised in v1.3.0 to describe the copy PCEdit now keeps, so it appears once more when you upgrade. Its wording is the single source shared by the app, the Linux store listing, and the repository's DISCLAIMER.md.

The About page

Shows the running version — quote it when reporting a bug — plus the disclaimer text, the folder PCEdit keeps its save copies in, and the save-file locations for each platform.
