Save File Locations

Where The Planet Crafter keeps its saves. The same list is on PCEdit's About page.

Platform Path
Windows — Steam %UserProfile%\AppData\LocalLow\MijuGames\Planet Crafter
Windows — Xbox / PC Game Pass %LocalAppData%\Packages\MijuGames.ThePlanetCrafter_ta6nvwnbx9v7t\SystemAppData\wgs
Linux — Steam (Proton) ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/1284190/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/LocalLow/MijuGames/Planet Crafter/
macOS ~/Library/Application Support/MijuGames/Planet Crafter

If you installed your Steam library on another drive, replace ~/.steam/steam with that library folder.

Back up first

PCEdit overwrites the file you opened — there is no "Save As". Since v1.3.0 it copies the original aside the first time it saves a file after you open it (see where those copies go), but that is a safety net, not a substitute for your own backup:

cp "Standard-2.json" "Standard-2.json.bak"
Copy-Item "Standard-2.json" "Standard-2.json.bak"

Copying the whole save folder is safer still — the game keeps a Backup.json of its own, and you want a copy of that too if something goes wrong.

Steam saves

Named after the world, e.g. Standard-2.json, Chill-1.json, plus Backup.json. The extension is .json, but the file is not JSON overall — see Save File Format.

Xbox / PC Game Pass saves (WGS)

The Game Pass build stores saves as GUID-named blobs with no extension, and it picks a new random name every time the game saves. There is also a container.NNN file — that is the WGS index, not a save.

To find the right blob: sort by size and by modified time. The largest, most recently written file is normally the current save; the next largest is its backup. PCEdit rejects anything that is not a save file, so opening the wrong blob is harmless.

Important

Game Pass saves are written without a UTF-8 byte-order mark, and the game refuses a save that gains one ("file error"). PCEdit preserves whatever framing the file already has — this was a real bug, fixed in v1.1.1. Just don't round-trip a Game Pass save through a text editor that adds a BOM.

After editing

Close the game before editing, and let the game load the edited save fresh. If the game is running when you save over its file, it may write its own copy back over yours on the next in-game save.
