Quick Start

Your first edit, end to end. Takes about two minutes.

1. Close the game, back up the save

Quit The Planet Crafter first — the game rewrites its save file on its own schedule and will happily overwrite your edit. Then copy the save somewhere safe; see Save File Locations.

2. Launch PCEdit and acknowledge the disclaimer

On first run PCEdit shows a one-time disclaimer ("use at your own risk, back up your saves"). The acknowledgement is remembered in settings.

The window is a nav pane on the left, the current page on the right, and a header bar with the Save button and the current file's state.

3. Open a save

Open File in the nav pane → Choose Save File… → pick the save file. PCEdit parses it and unlocks the other pages. The loaded path is shown in the footer.

If the file is not a Planet Crafter save, the open fails and says so — nothing is written.

4. Make an edit

Pick a page:

Page Typical first edit
Overview & Terraforming Expand a planet, raise a terraforming value, Apply
Terra Tokens Choose a player, enter an amount, Grant
Inventories Find an item, Move it into another container
Teleport Choose a player, pick a landmark, Teleport

Each page applies its change into memory only. The header shows unsaved changes until you save.

5. Save

Press Save in the header (or Ctrl+S). PCEdit writes back over the file you opened, preserving its exact framing — same byte-order-mark behaviour, same number formatting, unknown keys untouched. The first save after opening a file also copies the original into PCEdit's backups folder (shown on the About page).

Closing the window with unsaved changes asks for confirmation first.

6. Load it in the game

Start the game and load the save. If something looks wrong, quit without saving in-game and restore your backup.

Good habits

  • One change at a time, then check it in-game. It is much easier to work out what broke.
  • Keep the backup until you have played a session on the edited save.
  • Coordinates are per-planet — see Teleport before typing raw X/Y/Z.
  • In multiplayer, only the host player's position applies reliably.
