Monoleaf
Conventional document editors, such as Word or Google Docs, store content plus comments, tracked changes, and formatting in a hidden internal format that cannot be read directly. Monoleaf edits .md files as full documents while keeping comments, tracked changes, page setup, and metadata inside the same file as plain text. There is no hidden document model, no sidecar file, and no database: what can be read in the file is the entire document. Because the format is plain text, the project describes it as safe to hand directly to a language model, since a model reading the file will not silently rewrite its document structure the way it might with a binary or database-backed format.
As of August 2026 the repository has 48 stars and 2 open issues, an early-stage project.
This is placed in Assess. It proposes a genuinely different document model, plain text as the sole source of truth for comments and tracked changes, that is directly relevant to workflows where an LLM reads or edits documents alongside a human. It is early-stage with a small community, and there is no first-person production use yet, which is the gate for Trial.
