Annotation Color Labels
In Zotero, you can highlight text inside PDF files using different colors. Better Notes extends this by allowing you to attach semantic meaning to these colors and organize annotations accordingly.
Semantic Labels
You can assign custom text labels to Zotero's default highlight colors (e.g. Yellow, Red, Green, Blue) in the plugin settings:
Yellow → "Important"
Red → "Question / Disagree"
Green → "Methodology"
These labels can then be automatically prefixed to annotations when they are exported to Markdown or note content, providing instant context to your reading highlights.
Grouping and Sorting Annotations
Using the Liquid template engine, you can group annotations based on their color labels using the {% annotations grouped %} block tag:
Custom Ordering: Configure the exact order in which color groups should appear (e.g., show all "Important" highlights first, followed by "Methodology").
Section Generation: Better Notes can automatically divide your exported note into sections based on these color groups, making it easy to summarize key findings, definitions, and questions separately.
