Soundown
Defiant was built without any type of sound/heat insulation between the engine bay and the cabin. Running the motor at 2,000 RPM (cruising speed on a stagnant day) was brutally loud, and that sound fatigue will drag you down hours before you should be spent for the day. When you ride motorcycles you throw in a pair of earplugs and can suddenly ride 3 extra hours without feeling beat; on a boat, nobody wants to permanently wear earplugs in their own home. Also it's not really fair to the dog with the giant ears.
So I went with the industry standard, Soundown 3 layer sound insulation, 1lb 1" thick. Anything thicker would not have fit. This stuff feels like lead blankets, but wow does it work.
I don't know that I trust the measurements of this online DB meter (The "before" state was so loud that two people standing next to each other would need to scream to talk), but I do trust the delta.
What a huge difference this made. I can now realistically take a call underway or just relax and not have a jackhammer going off three feet from my head. My hope is that it will chill Bash out a bit more too.
