Release list
v1.0.1
English translation of Snatcher, version 1.0.1. The Sega Saturn patch fixes a softlock in 1.0: after Metal Gear's introduction at JUNKER HQ (Ask Harry about the Navigator), Harry's last subtitle, "But this one was developed for peaceful use.", stayed on screen over the menu, so the game looked stuck on that line. If you are playing the Saturn 1.0, patch your original tracks again with 1.0.1; your saves carry over. The PlayStation patch is unchanged (1.0) and is included again here. Changes: CHANGELOG-Saturn.md, CHANGELOG.md.
Burning a Saturn disc with cdrdao or the MiSTer's Disc Tools: see Compatibility in the README.
Each zip has the xdelta patches, the cue, apply.bat / apply.sh (checks your dump, patches, checks the result) and a README with the steps.

v0.9.1
Snatcher (PlayStation) English translation, version 0.9.1.
The zip holds two xdelta patches (translation only, and translation + the PlayStation-only censorship undone), a .cue for each, the apply guide and the changelog. Apply to a redump BIN of Snatcher (Japan) (SLPS-00154); see README.txt in the zip or the repository README for the hashes and the steps.
What changed since 0.9 (full list in CHANGELOG.md):
- Every menu label reviewed: some 400 labels that had been cut short to fit the Japanese footprint are spelled out, and a handful of wrong ones corrected (the pet shop's parrot, the VR Aquarium, the chessboard, the man on the ground in the factory ruins...). The tricycle reads "Board Tricycle" / "Exit Tricycle" beside "Go inside".
- The OPTION MENU has a SPECIAL OPTIONS item that opens the hidden SPECIAL MENU; the Konami code is no longer needed.
- The "Check" verb is "Investigate".
- The script re-punctuated (the dashes are gone) and reworded in plainer English throughout.
- Subtitles: Metal Gear's replies at the Neo Kobe-yaki stand carded; the fortune teller's portrait; Metal Gear's animation beside his lines; Gillian's sneeze; the brief flash of the old layout before a portrait; the videophone's typed field centred on the TV picture.
v0.9
Two patches. Both carry the same English translation; pick one.
Snatcher (Japan) [T-En by pepa v0.9].xdelta— the translation only, with the game's artwork exactly as Konami shipped it on the Japanese disc.Snatcher (Japan) [T-En by pepa v0.9] (Uncensored).xdelta— the same translation, plus the PlayStation-only censorship undone: the greyed-out corpse in the factory ruins and the mosaiced body under the hospital both have uncensored originals sitting unused on the disc, and this loads those instead. The female Snatcher's body is restored too. Nothing is redrawn or added.
Saves work across both, so you can switch by re-patching.
What changed since 0.8.1 — the full list, 65 entries in three sections (script fixes, bug fixes, game changes) with the story-relevant ones folded away, is in CHANGELOG.md. The headlines:
- The speaker's portrait stays on screen and the subtitle sits beside it (#8, #23). The game draws the characters' portraits inside the dialogue box, so earlier releases hid them; now only the person speaking is shown, at the left, with the subtitle beside them and no nameplate. The portrait leaves with its line.
- Longer subtitle cards. A line shares one card wherever it fits, and a line too long for one card is cut at a sentence or clause, not after the last word that fit.
- The last scenes of the game and the ending are subtitled. From the door of the last room of Act 3 to the escape, nothing was subtitled - the cards were filed under the scene before; the ending after the escape had never been written.
- The hospital basement is subtitled from the face reconstruction on, plus the door-3 line (#25) and the morgue's first line (#28); the Act 3 news bulletin, the tube liner's subway explanation (#16), Randam's motorcycle ride (#21) and a few shouts that had no card.
- Gaudi's topic lists no longer break their entries across rows (#31).
- No more gaps inside words ("hand ke rchief") and no more detached letters at the end of a subtitle row ("an d").
- Some thirty subtitles named the wrong speaker - fixed one by one, listed in the changelog.
- A subtitle near the end that was clipped to a few characters per row draws in full (#4).
- The opening narration is easier to read (#19); an instruction-cache flush after every scene load, a possible cause of rare freezes on real hardware (#20, #26).
- Every remaining shortened label spelled out ("Factory ruins", "Gillian's home", "Do something", "Pollen"...).
Known issues are the open items in the tracker; one to name: beside some of Randam's lines near the end a small garbage sprite shows at the right of the box (#4). It is the game's own - it shows with the subtitle code disabled too - but our layout puts it inside the box; the text stays readable.
Apply the .xdelta to a redump BIN of Snatcher (Japan) — see README.txt in the zip for the command and the expected hashes. Load the game from a memory card save, not a save state made on an earlier version: a save state carries the old version's text and shows the old bugs.
Tested on real hardware, MiSTer, DuckStation and RetroArch (Beetle PSX / Beetle PSX HW); players report it working on PSP and PS Vita (Adrenaline) and on PSIO.
v0.8.1
Re-issue of 0.8 — the game is unchanged. The 0.8 (Uncensored) image was built over a leftover image instead of a fresh copy of the original, which left the last sector of the relocated executable with a blank sector subheader. Its contents were identical and it played the same, but the two 0.8 images were not made the same way and a clean rebuild did not reproduce the published one. The build now stamps every sector it writes and refuses to start over an image it could not delete, so both patches come from fresh, identical builds. If you already applied 0.8 there is nothing you need to do; 0.8.1 is the one to download from now on. The only other byte that changed is the version on the translation card.
Two patches. Both carry the same English translation; pick one.
Snatcher (Japan) [T-En by pepa v0.8.1].xdelta— the translation only, with the game's artwork exactly as Konami shipped it on the Japanese disc.Snatcher (Japan) [T-En by pepa v0.8.1] (Uncensored).xdelta— the same translation, plus the PlayStation-only censorship undone: the greyed-out corpse in the factory ruins and the mosaiced body under the hospital both have uncensored originals sitting unused on the disc, and this loads those instead. The female Snatcher's body is restored too. Nothing is redrawn or added.
Saves work across both, so you can switch by re-patching.
Changes since 0.7.1 (the 0.8 list):
- The Act 2 videophone had no subtitles at all (issues #17, #16). Calling Jamie when she is not home plays her recorded message; the Kobe Pharmaceuticals lab, Napoleon, the Chief and wrong numbers all answer with a voice. None of it was subtitled — that scene carried no subtitle data whatsoever.
- The first two and a half minutes of Act 2 had no subtitles. Arriving at HQ, Metal replays his Act 1 report to the Chief — the montage, the two suspects, Lisa, Gibson's ulcer — and none of it was subtitled; text only began when the new montage started.
- Text no longer breaks in the middle of a word (issue #14). Rows were filled to a fixed character count and cut wherever that fell, so lines split as
Euras / ian. Rows now break at a space, and Gaudi's database and person files were re-broken for that terminal's narrower window. - The dialogue frame vanished after the emergency call from HQ (issue #18), and could stay stuck 80 px low for the rest of a scene after re-entering Freddy Nielsen's room (issue #15).
- A menu could open on top of a subtitle (issue #3) after the Lisa fight.
- Ivan Rodriguez's door: five spoken lines had no subtitles — the exchange over the unconscious Ivan, and his own plea.
Known issue worth naming: six voiced lines still carry no subtitle (issue #16). Three are in scenes we can reach and will be written next; three are audio no playthrough has ever triggered. If you hear one, please say where.
Apply the .xdelta to a redump BIN of Snatcher (Japan) — see README.txt in the zip for the command and the expected hashes.
Tested on real hardware, MiSTer, DuckStation and RetroArch (Beetle PSX / Beetle PSX HW) as 0.8; 0.8.1 differs only as described above.
v0.8 (superseded by v0.8.1)
Superseded by v0.8.1. Same game data; 0.8.1 re-issues both patches from fresh, identical builds after the
(Uncensored)image here was found to have been built over a leftover image (one sector header differs, contents identical). If you already applied 0.8 you do not need to re-patch. Kept for reference only.
Two patches this time. Both carry the same English translation; pick one.

Tested on real hardware, MiSTer, DuckStation and RetroArch (Beetle PSX / Beetle PSX HW).
v0.7.1
Changes in this version:
- PS3: 0.7 froze on the Sony logo - fixed (issue #13). 0.7 moved the
game executable to the very last sector of the image, and the PS3's
PlayStation emulator hangs when the drive reads ahead past the end of
the disc; real hardware, MiSTer and the PC emulators tolerate it. The
image now ends with the same 2-second run of empty sectors the original
disc has after its last file.
Nothing else changed from 0.7. Tested on real hardware, PS3, MiSTer,
DuckStation and RetroArch (Beetle PSX / Beetle PSX HW).
Apply the .xdelta to a redump BIN of Snatcher (Japan) (see README.txt
in the zip).
v0.7
Changes in this version:
- Nothing is abbreviated for space any more. Earlier releases
shortened labels to fit the original byte budgets; the remap that
freed menu labels in 0.6 now carries everything. "Joy Division" (was
"J. Division"), "Fortune teller", "Bounty Hunters", "Red Square",
"Oleen Hospital", "Hospital list", "Little John's memory", "Queen
Hospital" in the item descriptions, "Chess piece", "Chinese doctor",
"Food stall", "Answerphone", "Bloodstain", "Time machine",
"Volleyball", the phone book's prefectures, and every topic in Gaudi's
database ("City founding", "Siberian Territory", "Nuclear Abolition",
"Witch hunts", "Scanning warrant", "Nanomachines", "Retina Reading",
"Mars Chronicles"...) - about eighty labels in all, each checked
against the Japanese. Initials the Japanese script itself uses stay
(the dossiers' "S. Glazer", the "JK card"). - Gibson's body at the factory ruins is the disc's own uncensored
picture and nothing more. 0.6 also pasted his severed head into the
shot the way the PC Engine frames it; that edit is gone. Only the
PS1's grey-out is undone. - Outer Heaven, Act 1: the thug and the master are subtitled when
the JUNKER ID is shown inside (and the shooting that can follow). The
lines had been filed under the entrance scene and never drew. - RetroArch (Beetle PSX / Beetle PSX HW): black screen after the Konami
boot movie - fixed. The translation card baked into the boot movie
hung the BIOS memory-card check whenever a second memory card was
present, which every RetroArch setup has; DuckStation and hardware were
unaffected. The boot movie is now untouched: the translation card is
drawn by code before the game starts instead of being baked into the
movie. - Gaudi's name search drew only the highlighted key - no keyboard, no
input box - in any game started from New Game (GitHub issue #12). The
opening's subtitles left part of the dialogue sprite set in a state the
game's own start-up then skipped over. Present since 0.5; fixed. - Outer Heaven's interior said "Use Metal" where every other place says
"Use Metal Gear" (GitHub issue #10).
Tested on DuckStation, RetroArch (Beetle PSX / Beetle PSX HW) and MiSTer.
Apply the .xdelta to a redump BIN of Snatcher (Japan) (see README.txt in the zip); the boot movie is untouched again and the translation card is drawn by code before the game starts.
v0.6
Changes in this version:
Script changes:
- Character names now follow the Japanese original instead of the Sega CD
localization (GitHub issue #1): Randam Hajile (not Random - the name
is Madnar spelled backwards), Dr. Madnar (not Modnar), Catherine
Gibson (not Katrina - カトリーヌ), Gaudi (the JUNKER computer).
Applied everywhere: dialogue, voice subtitles, menus, the Gaudi name
search, the memo pages, the credit rolls.
Game changes:
- Konami shipped this port with pictures toned down:
Gibson's body at the factory ruins, the maggot-covered skull under
Queen Hospital, and Lisa's body at Freddy's flat.
This patch removes the the censorship in those scenes using original
assets that were already existing in the disc but unused, Lisa's body
that was manually repainted based on the PC Engine.
Bug fixes
-
Menu labels that never fit their slots now have room: the label
redirection table lives inside each scene bank instead of a full 1.3 KB
corner of the executable. "Mechanic room", "Near desk" and "About
Catherine" read in full everywhere; "Queen Hospital" and "Door 1/2/3"
too. -
Jamie's videophone call in the turbocycle, after JUNKER HQ, is subtitled
(it played without subtitles before). -
Napoleon's conversation in Outer Heaven uses the full width of the box
instead of wrapping at ten characters; his sneeze no longer gets a card. -
Three lines that had stayed in Japanese are translated: Metal on the
maggot-covered body and its insects, on the torn collar at Gibson's
house, and Gillian on the rows of pods. -
A few voice lines showed a short card where a longer, complete one had
been written (GitHub issue #9) - Ivan's scanning-warrant speech, Harry
calling Metal Gear in. The complete cards show now.
v0.5.2
0.5.2 — 2026-09-08
Changes
Packaging:
Assets will be stored in zip format because github was sanitizing the file names.
Translation fixes :
Act 1:
- JUNKER HQ, Harry's drunk scene: the verb menu no longer draws over the
last subtitle, and the last card is no longer cut short when Metal's
face band opens. - Gibson's house: the goodbye when leaving (Gillian's address and number,
Katrina's farewell) is now subtitled; two lines wrongly credited to
Katrina and Gillian are Metal's ("G-Gillian...", "What a false alarm!"). - Videophone: Napoleon's riddle prompt reads "Revolution?" instead of
"Revolt?"; his first greeting is "Yeah? Who is it?" (was a
mis-transcription); Jamie's date menu says "Sea" instead of "Se". - The picture item label reads "Pic" in three rooms (B060, B080, Gillian's
flat) — the space went to the fixes above. - The flight to the factory ruins (the narration over Gillian in the
cockpit) is subtitled.
