Tool Donations and Lending

Donating Tools

Donation Process

• Contact us regarding the specific item(s) you wish to donate
• We will evaluate if the tools meet our current needs
• Acceptable tools will be assessed for condition and usability
• Donations are accepted at our discretion based on space and community needs

Types of Tools Accepted

• Tools in good working condition
• Equipment that complements our current offerings
• Specialized tools that add value to our maker community
• Supplies and materials in usable condition

Benefits of Donating

• For tools we need in the shop or can resell, we can organize an exchange for:
  • Credit toward membership or services
  • Workshop access
  • Classes or certifications
• Tools not needed in our shop will be donated to Rebuilding Together Seattle (a non-profit in our building)

Tax Information

• We do not currently offer a tax exemption for donations
• No tax receipt will be provided

Bringing Your Own Tools

Policy for Personal Tools

• Members may bring their own tools to use in the makerspace
• We need to notify our insurance about the tool before it can be used
• Each tool will be evaluated for safety
• Some equipment may not be approved due to safety or insurance concerns
• Flamethrowers and similar hazardous tools are not permitted

Storage of Personal Tools

• Limited storage for personal tools is available with certain membership levels
• All personal tools should be clearly labeled
• Seattle Makers is not responsible for damage to personal tools

Tool Lending

Borrowing Tools

• Tools must remain at the makerspace (inside, on our balcony, or in our parking lot)
• We are not currently set up to lend tools for off-site use due to:
  • Lack of a tracking system
  • Inadequate staffing for management
  • Insurance limitations

If you need to borrow tools for off-site use, please check these local resources:

Equipment Sharing

Community Collaboration

• Members are encouraged to collaborate and share knowledge about specialized tools
• Group purchases or tool-sharing arrangements between members are welcomed
• Community-owned tools may be considered with appropriate agreements
