Direct examination

Direct examination is the initial questioning of a witness, by the party that called them to the stand.  Under the civil procedure rules, leading questions are not allowed during direct examination unless an exception applies.  Direct examination is generally followed by an opportunity for cross examination which is limited to matters testified to during direct examination under Rule 611 of Rules of Evidence.
