Status LED
An optional LED behind the mat shows what the frame is doing. It needs one addressable RGB pixel, such as a WS2812B on a small board, three short wires, and a soldering iron. It works on both kits, with firmware 0.2.8 or newer.
-
Find U6 on the driver board: an empty footprint with eight pads, just below the XIAO. The chip next to it, U5, is fitted; leave it alone.
-
Find pad 1, next to the empty spot for R39. Pads 1–4 run along one side, and pad 8 faces pad 1. With the XIAO at the top, pad 1 is the top-left pad on the EE03 but the bottom-right pad on the EE02, where U6 is turned the other way round.
-
Before soldering, check the pads with a multimeter in continuity mode:
- Pads 7 and 8 beep to the XIAO's 3V3 pin.
- Pad 4 beeps to the XIAO's GND pin.
-
Solder the LED's wires:
LED U6 pad DIN 1 5V 7 or 8 (3.3 V) GND 4 -
Leave the LED's DOUT side unconnected.
-
Mount the LED behind a small hole in the mat.
What each color means is on Your frame.
Note
On battery, the LED stays dark between check-ins. The LED draws about 1 mA even when dark, which shortens battery life a little.
Next: Flash the frame.
