Your frame

What your frame's buttons do, what its light and screen are telling you, and when the picture changes.

Buttons

Counting from the USB-C port, the buttons are:

Button What it does
KEY1 Check for a new picture now.
KEY2 Show today's collage for 5 minutes.
KEY3 Show the frame's status for 5 minutes.
Hold 3 seconds: change Wi-Fi. See Change Wi-Fi.
Hold while plugging in: forget Wi-Fi.
RESET Restart the frame.

After a press, a label at the bottom of the picture says what happened. A gray frame also shows one while it works, such as Loading image. A label such as Check failed or Collage failed means the frame couldn't reach Featherframe: try again. No collage yet means today's collage hasn't been drawn.

The light

A small light behind the mat says what the frame is doing. It's dark while the frame shows pictures normally.

Color Meaning
White, breathing Starting up or restarting.
Blue, breathing slowly Wi-Fi setup is open. Join Featherframe-Setup on your phone.
Blue, steady Your phone is on Featherframe-Setup. Choose a network.
Blue, pulsing quickly Joining the network you chose.
Red, two pulses Couldn't join that network. Check the password and try again.
Green, breathing On Wi-Fi, getting its picture.
Amber, breathing Showing its setup code. On a self-hosted server: waiting to be added.
Purple, fast breathing Installing a firmware update.
Red, blinking Can't join Wi-Fi.
Orange, blinking On Wi-Fi, but can't reach Featherframe.

If you built your frame, it has a light only if you added one.

What the screen shows

On the screen What it means
Three setup steps and Featherframe-Setup Wi-Fi setup is open. See Set up your frame. On Featherframe Cloud, the third step says to scan the code. If yours asks for an IP address instead, skip it.
If no page opens, go to 192.168.4.1. Stay on Featherframe-Setup, and go to http://192.168.4.1 in your phone's browser.
Connecting, or Connecting to Wi-Fi and Connecting to server The frame is joining Wi-Fi and reaching Featherframe.
Waiting for the first image The frame reached Featherframe, which hasn't drawn its first picture yet.
A setup code and a QR code The frame isn't set up yet, or it was removed from its account. See Set up your frame.
No detections yet The frame is set up and waiting for the first detection. Listening since says when it started.
Detection source unreachable Featherframe can't get detections. Check Detection source in your Featherframe webapp. See Troubleshooting.
A line under the picture: No detections since a time Your detector hasn't heard anything for several hours. Check that it's running.
A line under the picture: Detection source unreachable since a time Featherframe hasn't reached your detection source for an hour.
Can't reach Wi-Fi The frame can't join your Wi-Fi. It keeps trying, and says when it will try next. Help: featherframe.app/help/wifi opens Troubleshooting.
Can't reach server The frame is on Wi-Fi but can't reach Featherframe. It keeps trying, and says when it will try next. Help: featherframe.app/help/wifi opens Troubleshooting.
A small circle in the bottom corner The frame hasn't been able to check in for 30 minutes. It keeps the last picture, and the circle goes once it's back.
Add this frame on the Featherframe webapp Self-hosted only: the frame is waiting to be added. See Add a frame.

On a self-hosted server, the third setup step is the server's address. Enter it under Server → Self-hosted only if the frame doesn't find the server by itself.

When the picture changes

The picture changes each time your detector hears a species. It waits in two cases:

  • During quiet hours, a frame showing individual detections shows the day's collage. Quiet hours are sunset to sunrise unless you change them.
  • A species your detector has never heard before needs a confident detection or a second one, so a mistaken detection isn't shown.

Tip

To show a picture now, open Tools under the preview in your Featherframe webapp, then click Refresh, or type a species under Manual override and click Show.

A gray frame changes its picture in about a second. A color frame takes about 15 seconds, and flashes while it does. That's normal for its six-ink screen.

To choose what a frame shows, such as the collage all day, see Settings.
