Page Meta

Page Meta stores the preview and listing details for a page: image, summary, tags, and the date used when sorting lists. Open it from the CMS toolbar while you are editing a page.

Page Meta modal

Open Page Meta

  1. Log in and go to the page.
  2. Turn Edit mode on (Page Meta is disabled when you are not editing).
  3. Open the Page menu in the toolbar.
  4. Choose Page Meta.
  5. Update the fields and save.

Changes are live immediately for visitors and for any list or card that reads this data. There is no draft/publish step.

Fields

Field What it does
image Preview image for cards and lists that link to this page (news cards, people lists, archive/search cards that show an image, and similar).
image_alt Alternative text for the preview image (accessibility).
image_caption Caption associated with the preview image for listings that use it.
summary_caption Short summary shown on cards, search results, and archive listings that link to this page.
tags Tags from your site’s tag list. Used to filter lists, group search categories, and categorize archive views. Manage the tag list in Page-Tags.
publish_date Date used when sorting news, people, and archive listings. If empty, the system falls back to the page’s creation date.

What each field affects

Preview image (image, image_alt, image_caption)

Affects How
Cards and page lists Many list/card widgets show this image when they link to the page.
People lists Person grid/stacked lists use the Page Meta image for each person page.
Accessibility image_alt is the alt text for that preview image.
Captions image_caption travels with the preview for contexts that display an image caption.

This image is separate from images you place inside the page body (for example in Story Body or Page Content). Set Page Meta even if the article already has an inline photo, so listings have a reliable thumbnail.

Summary (summary_caption)

Affects How
Cards linking to the page Shown as the card summary when the list is configured to show summaries.
Search results Shown under the title in site search.
Archive listings Shown as the short description on archive result cards.

Keep it short — one or two sentences that still make sense out of context.

Tags

Affects How
Filtered lists Child Page List, Event List, Events Insert, people lists, and side-nav child lists can limit results to pages with certain tags.
Search Tags marked as search categories help group or label search results (see Page-Tags).
Archive Tags marked as archive categories appear in archive browsing (see Archiving and Page-Tags).

Add only tags that already exist (or ask an admin to create them in Page-Tags).

Publish date (publish_date)

Affects How
News / child page lists Ordering by publication date uses this value when set.
People / archive sorting Same date preference for listings and archives that sort by date.
Fallback If blank, sorting uses the page creation date.

On a News Story page, the Publish Date placeholder in the story header is separate display content. Set publish_date in Page Meta when you care about list and archive order. See Pages-and-Templates and News.

When to fill it in

Fill Page Meta whenever the page will appear in a list, card, search result, or archive entry:

  • News stories and landing children
  • Event and event series pages (often tagged as events)
  • Person pages
  • Any page you feature with a card or child list widget

Home and one-off utility pages may leave some fields blank if they never appear in cards.
