The new Main Menu Title and Buttons User Test

EricZhu123 edited this page Oct 18, 2021 · 4 revisions

Background and Goals

We have designed and implemented a new style of the title, word fonts and buttons on the main menu:

  • All words and buttons in the main menu have been redeveloped, so we need to run a user evaluation test to gain feedback for the new design.
  • The new button layout design is set to solve some previous problems that too many buttons were put on the main menu and made the menu hard to use.
  • In addition, the new font style and colour of buttons are supposed to be better related to the topic of the game that expresses a tense and exciting atmosphere.

This user test is to get enough feedback to improve our design.

Changes from Sprint4: Since the version implemented in Sprint 3 has been reported with a bug as the position of some buttons are incorrect while in the full-screen mode. Thus, we fixed the problem and do renewed user testing.

Process

Our survey is divided into two parts:

  1. Potential target population:
  • We invite them to watch the prototype of the new main menu;
  • After the demonstration, we interviewed a few questions about their feeling when seeing the new style and layout of words and buttons.
  1. Professional developer/designer:
  • Show them the prototype;
  • Ask them questions about the layout and font setting of the main menu;
  • To collect some suggestions from them.

Sample Questions

Potential target population:

  • Do you think the new style of words and buttons clearly and precisely expresses the topic of the game?
  • Do you think the new font, colour and position layout of words and buttons are aesthetically beautiful?
  • What do you think needs to be improved?

Professional developer/designer:

  • Do you think the new style of the button did a great job in terms of functionality?
  • From the aesthetic point of view, what do you think needs to be improved?
  • From the principle of interaction, do you think the font setting and layout of buttons on the screen are suitable?

Sprint 3 version Survey Result

User 1: Student A (Has joined user evaluation test for previous sprints)

  • Thoughts: I like the blood colour of the font as it strongly suggests to me that this is an exciting game.
  • Like: The colour of words and buttons are excellent.
  • Not so good: Some words which locate on the right bottom are too dark.
  • Comment: Nice development for everything.

User 2: Student B (Has joined user evaluation test for previous sprints)

  • Thoughts: Such expressive font is pretty suitable for this game's topic, and the colour is well chosen.
  • Like: Font, colour and size of words and buttons are good since they perfectly express a tense atmosphere.
  • Not so good: Nothing bad, I like these new designs.
  • Comment: Much better than the previous design.

User 3: Professional Student C

  • Thoughts: A very colourful and expressive design in terms of the whole screen.
  • Like: I like the colour you choose for the words and buttons.
  • Not so good: The caption for some buttons is not clear enough.
  • Suggestion: Some words are not very readable on the right bottom of the game.

User 4: Professional Student D

  • Thoughts: Brilliant design for captions and the name display.
  • Like: The colour and the font are highly related to the game's topic.
  • Not so good: Some buttons' caption is slightly hard to read.
  • Suggestion: Overall good, I like all of them. However, if I have to give some suggestions, maybe the font setting for buttons around the corner can be reconsidered.

Sprint 3 Summary

  • After interviewing four students (result above), many participants claimed that the new design is closer to the atmosphere of the game. In addition, they are all highly valued for the graphic design of the icons, font setting and screen layout.
  • This new button design received unanimous praise from both groups of participants. All participants agree that the new design makes the user better feel the atmosphere and the tense of the game's topic.
  • Regarding the downside of the design, some participants pointed out that some buttons are a little bit too dark, which slightly influenced the readability of the button.
  • All feedbacks are valuable and will be considered for the next sprint.

Sprint 4 Interview Results

User 1: Student A (Has joined user evaluation test for previous sprints)

BR1

The bug found in Sprint 3 version was not pretty obvious but matters a lot when playing the game in a full-screen mode.

User 2: Student B (Has joined user evaluation test for previous sprints)

BR2

The participant upvoted the change as an obvious bug has been fixed.

User 3: Student C (Has joined user evaluation test for previous sprints)

BR3

The participant is happy with the change.

User 4: Student D (Has joined user evaluation test for previous sprints)

BR4

The bug is fixed and fits this participant's expectation.

Sprint 4 Summary

  • Our participants highly rated the change we made in Sprint 4 since the bug left in Sprint 3 was pretty serious, so we fixed the bug quickly to ensure the game is stunning without any technical problem.
  • Since we have reached the end of the semester and no further development will happen on this feature, there is no need to gain more improvement suggestions for this feature.
  • We thank every participant who has joined our user testing evaluation.
