Glossary – Logistics Industry Terms

Common terms used in CargoNext and the logistics industry.

A

AWB (Air Waybill) – Document for air cargo; contract between shipper and carrier.

ABC Analysis – Inventory classification (A = high value, B = medium, C = low) for prioritization.

B

Bill of Lading (BL) – Document of title for sea freight; evidence of contract of carriage.

C

Change Request – Request to add additional charges to an existing job (Air Shipment, Sea Shipment, Transport Job, Warehouse Job, Declaration); approved charges are applied to the job.

Chargeable Weight – Weight used for freight pricing; max of gross and volumetric weight.

Consignee – Party to whom cargo is delivered.

Container Freight Station (CFS) – Facility for stuffing/stripping LCL containers.

Container Yard (CY) – Facility for full container handling.

Customs Broker – Licensed agent for customs clearance.

D

Demurrage – Charge for container held at port beyond free time.

Detention – Charge for container held by customer beyond free time.

DG (Dangerous Goods) – Cargo requiring special handling (IATA/IMDG).

Duty – Tax levied on imports/exports by customs.

E

ETD (Estimated Time of Departure) – Expected departure date.

ETA (Estimated Time of Arrival) – Expected arrival date.

Ex Works (EXW) – Incoterm; seller makes goods available at their premises.

F

FCL (Full Container Load) – Cargo filling one or more containers.

Freight Forwarder – Intermediary arranging transport for shippers.

FOB (Free on Board) – Incoterm; seller delivers on board vessel.

H

House BL – Bill of lading issued by forwarder to shipper (B2B).

HS Code – Harmonized System code for commodity classification.

I

Incoterms – International commercial terms (FOB, CIF, DDP, etc.).

IATA – International Air Transport Association; air cargo standards.

L

LCL (Less than Container Load) – Consolidated cargo; multiple shippers per container.

LTL (Less Than Truckload) – Partial truckload; multiple shippers per truck.

M

Master BL – Bill of lading issued by carrier to consolidator.

Manifest – List of cargo for customs/carrier.

P

POD (Proof of Delivery) – Evidence that cargo was delivered (signature, photo).

Putaway – Moving received goods to storage locations.

S

Shipper – Party who tenders cargo for transport.

TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit) – Standard container measure (1×20ft = 1 TEU).

U

ULD (Unit Load Device) – Pallet or container for aircraft loading.

UNLOCO – UN/LOCODE; UN location codes for ports, terminals.

V

VAS (Value-Added Services) – Services beyond basic storage (labeling, kitting, etc.).

Volumetric Weight – Volume-based weight for air freight (L×W×H/6000).
