Map and Node Memory

A node only holds about 350 contacts. mcIRC reads the radio's contact list every few minutes into nodes.db, so the map and node list show more than the radio can, and forgets nodes not seen for N days (default 10, optionally also removing them from the radio). Set it in Options > Node memory.

Instant updates from adverts

Between message polls mcIRC keeps a small listener connected to your node (USB, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth; messages and sends go through it as well - see Connecting Your Radio). When a node advertises, it appears in the node list and on the map, and a private window that only had a key like 3ddcdf84 gets its real name, within about a second. The listener steps aside the moment anything else needs the radio and catches up afterwards. If your radio is in manual-add mode, new adverts show as "waiting for approval". Switches: Options > Node memory (listen between polls / announce first sightings). If the listener keeps failing it switches itself off for the session and the usual 5-minute radio read still runs.

Map (View > Map...)

  • Toggle repeaters / companions / room servers / sensors
  • Show nodes remembered but no longer on the radio
  • "Seen within N days" filter, show names, show your own node
  • Heard by: one checkbox per node you connect (main and More nodes), with its frequency and connection - untick one to hide what only it has heard; a marker's details say which of your nodes heard it
  • Signals my radio hears: the routes of packets heard in the last 10 minutes, with a dot travelling along the newest
  • Extra layers added by addons (for example incidents, earthquakes, MeshCore tools' coverage)
  • Real OpenStreetMap tiles need pip install tkintermapview; otherwise a plain plot is shown
  • Tiles are fetched the way OpenStreetMap's tile policy asks (under mcIRC's own name) and kept on your PC for 7 days in the tile_cache folder (mcIRC 2026.10.23). If OpenStreetMap refuses them, the map shows your nodes without streets, asks again after 10 minutes, and Status says why. Before 2026.10.23 the map could show "Access blocked" tiles: update mcIRC.
  • "Show on map" in a node's right-click menu centres the map on it
