FAQ

Can I use it without a radio? Yes: python mcIRC.py --demo (fake data, never transmits).

Does it work on Mac/Linux? It is built and tested on Windows. An experimental Linux & macOS edition is on the releases page (same code, not yet tested on real machines - testers welcome).

Can I use two radios on different frequencies? Yes - Multiple Nodes.

Can my node connect over Wi-Fi? Yes, with MeshCore's Wi-Fi firmware, which mcIRC can build and flash for you: MeshCore Tools. It can even keep USB, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi all waiting on the same node.

Which devices work? Anything running MeshCore Companion firmware. See Connecting Your Radio.

Why does a node hold only 350 contacts but the map shows more? mcIRC keeps its own node memory; see Map and Node Memory.

Does mcIRC transmit on its own? No. Core mcIRC only sends what you type. Addons such as the bots, alert broadcasters or Auto reply can transmit; they are optional, off until you switch them on, and have off switches.

Is the admin password stored? No. /login keeps it in memory for the session only; it is not logged or saved.

Will an update wipe my settings? No - see Updating.

How do I get my addon in the catalog? Writing an Addon.

Do I have to donate? No. mcIRC is free, every feature works the same either way, and nothing ever nags you. The optional Support button is only there if you want to help.

Where do I suggest things? Help > Suggest an idea..., or an Idea issue on GitHub.
