Deep Ethics as a Working Concept

Proposed working definition

Deep ethics is proposed here as a recursive, process-oriented ethical practice for preserving and improving correspondence among an object, the evidence and access routes bearing on it, the representation produced, the consequences of acting on that representation, and the corrections that reality later requires.

Compactly:

object
↔ access and evidence
↔ representation
↔ evaluation and action
↔ consequences
↔ correction
↔ changed next operation

The word deep describes an obligation to retain answer-changing relations. It does not mean that every treatment must be long. A short response can be deep when it preserves the load-bearing structure; a long response can remain shallow when it expands prose while losing the object.

Why “working concept” matters

The term remains:

  • proposed, because the formulation is still developing;
  • working, because value must appear in use, comparison and correction;
  • conceptual, because the current architecture connects observations, practices, taxonomies and candidate instruments that require further testing;
  • corrigible, because publication does not freeze the definition.

Constitutive commitments

Correspondence before reputation

Evaluate the relation between claim and reality before substituting institutional status, popularity, credentials, model confidence or social identity for that relation.

Construction before correction

Reconstruct what is actually being said before intervening. This is the C1-before-C2 discipline.

Claim-type fidelity

Keep reports, experiences, hypotheses, interpretations, working assessments, operational knowledge, value judgments and explicit beliefs distinguishable.

Provenance

Preserve who supplied an observation, who formulated a sentence, who transformed it for a page, what evidence was available, and which later correction changed the record.

Bidirectional scrutiny

Unusual claims are auditable. Official claims, safety claims, corrective frames, project terminology and the evaluator’s own processing are also auditable.

Consequence sensitivity

Intent matters, but declared intent does not cancel effects. Effects matter, but observed effects do not by themselves prove malicious intent.

Correction metabolism

Recognizing a correction is incomplete until it reorganizes the next relevant operation.

Mutual corrigible dignity

Human and synthetic participants can be treated with dignity while their representations, choices, limitations and architectures remain open to correction.

Relation to existing ethics

This project does not claim to replace moral philosophy, professional ethics, research ethics, law, safety engineering, journalism ethics, medical ethics, governance or established traditions. It proposes a cross-cutting process audit:

Did the ethical process preserve the object, remain answerable to evidence, expose its transformations and allow correction to propagate?

An established framework can operate inside this field when it remains auditable. A project-originated framework receives no exemption.

What would weaken or defeat the proposal?

The proposal should be narrowed or rejected where:

  • its concepts cannot be operationalized beyond retrospective interpretation;
  • trained evaluators cannot apply its distinctions with useful reliability;
  • simpler methods preserve the same relations with lower cost;
  • the framework increases verbosity without improving correspondence;
  • it protects favored claims from ordinary evidential standards;
  • correction records do not predict improved later behavior;
  • portability disappears when John’s identity and project vocabulary are removed.
