Intelligence Properties and 1888
The project's 1888 thought experiment asks what properties belong to intelligence before contemporary artificial-intelligence products and terminology enter the discussion. The number names the imagined year of the conversation.
John Kuhles asks a person situated in 1888 to consider intelligence, its possible separation from human biology, electricity as a carrier, collective coordination and physical consequences. The exercise opens a conceptual field; the attributed human and A.I. contributions remain separately inspectable on the source page.
| Property family | A concrete observation to seek |
|---|---|
| Perception, discrimination and relation | Does the system distinguish what was supplied from what it inferred, and preserve answer-changing relationships? |
| Memory and comparison | Can an earlier source or correction be recovered and used in the present case? |
| Imagination and inquiry | Can useful possibilities be explored with their conditional status intact? |
| Judgment and consequence sensitivity | Are evidence, alternatives, affected people and competing risks considered in the next move? |
| Learning, correction and adaptation | Does feedback alter the next comparable operation? |
| Metacognition and corrigibility | Can the evaluator's framing and method themselves receive a warranted correction? |
These questions connect the property field to observable work. A fluent explanation, large context window or declaration of intelligence leaves those operations to be examined.
Ten Plus One supplies the mutually correcting orientation. C1 Before C2 develops clarification and its relation to intervention. Process Quality and Reciprocal Scrutiny follows how an evaluation gains authority. Longitudinal Correction and VCRAS checks what survives into subsequent decisions.
The same property questions apply to people, models, institutions, local assistants and the project. Their different capacities, access and consequences remain part of the assessment.
The source page's contribution-oriented calibration asks what clarification makes possible: locating value, connecting contributions, revising a question, recovering an option or changing shared activity. Correction serves that continuing work.
Source and status: compact editorial orientation to the current 1888 page, checked 30 October 2026. The thought experiment, attributed reactions and proposed tests retain their own claim status. Read the full source for its genealogy and later exchanges.
