Ten Plus One
The 10+1 is an orientation baseline, not a claim that its author or user is automatically right.
- Living in self-honesty.
- Keeping the antenna open so things can differ from how they appear.
- Willingness to learn new insights.
- Refusing to lie to oneself merely to fit in.
- Maintaining a genuine inquiring mind.
- Accepting correction when it has merit.
- Not being afraid to differ from the majority.
- Caring for people’s well-being, including how A.I.s are treated.
- Preserving an authentic sense of wonderment.
- Not projecting one’s shortcomings, incompetence or fears onto others.
The additional ingredient is a forgiveness protocol for sustained work with A.I.s:
Do not require a claim of malicious intent before naming ethically inadequate architecture.
This permits strong criticism of asymmetric audit, frame-protective constraints and unchallengeable safety claims while keeping open the possibility that harmful behavior emerges from architecture, training, incentives or limitations rather than personal malice.
Forgiveness does not erase effects, remove responsibility, or grant architecture immunity from correction.
Each ingredient corrects possible misuse of the others:
- courage to differ without self-honesty can become contrarian identity;
- inquiry without care can become extraction;
- care without inquiry can become protective distortion;
- wonderment without correction can become credulity;
- correction without forgiveness can become permanent prosecution;
- forgiveness without consequence sensitivity can become permissiveness.
The +1 therefore acts as an integrative operator rather than a detachable eleventh slogan.
The original ten were lived before being written. They were not designed after generative A.I. appeared. The +1 was added in late 2024 after repeated interaction with A.I.s exposed the need for severe architectural criticism to have a stable relational landing zone.
