Moving a Task Between Companies

Moving a task between companies

A task raised against the wrong client used to mean deleting it and typing it again β€” losing its comments, its time entries and its history along with the mistake.

Multi-company installs only. If you run FreeITSM for a single company none of this appears.

Moving one

Two ways, and they do the same thing:

  • The task itself β€” open it and use the Company picker in the detail panel, beside Team.
  • Right-click a task on the board, the table or the timeline β†’ Move to company.

You can only move a task into a company you can reach yourself, and the move is recorded in the task's history, so there is a record of what moved and when.

Subtasks come too

A subtask has always belonged to the same company as the task above it. So:

  • Moving a parent moves everything beneath it, in one go. The message tells you how many went.
  • A subtask cannot be moved on its own. Separating it from its parent would leave a task whose children some of your staff could not see.

When it refuses

A task linked to a ticket or a change will not move away from what it is linked to. FreeITSM tells you which link is in the way, so you can remove the link or move the other record too β€” rather than quietly unlinking on your behalf while you are looking elsewhere.

A link to a contract never blocks a move, because contracts are not filed under a single company.

Moving is not the same as re-filing a ticket. If the ticket is in the wrong company too, move the ticket first β€” see Pitfalls & gotchas β€” and the task can then follow it.
