Filenames that Windows cannot even create (: ? CON trailing dots...)? Put them in a zip, carry it, unpack it back on *nix.

Quick summary

zip extracts into ONE single ZIP64 file (STORED, or -deflate). It is the x command: same filters, same -until, same -range, only the output is a .zip. Symlinks, *nix permissions and mtime are kept.

Power user usage

  • -to X.zip the file to be created; without -to the .zip is born beside the archive (same name, .zip) and must NOT exist yet (or -force)
  • -all every version, mount-style: one VER00000000, VER00000001... folder per version, each the FULL tree (a zip does not deduplicate: the size is printed first)
  • -range X:Y with -all, only the version folders from X to Y
  • -deflate (alias -zip) compress (method 8) instead of storing; folders, symlinks, files under 64 bytes and already compressed files stay STORED
  • -force overwrite the default .zip; with -all go on beyond 5.000.000 entries
  • -space do not check the free space

Lo spiegone

zip is command x with flagzip set: the checks of x about the filesystem (sanitizing, >255, collisions) are skipped, because inside a zip every *nix name is legal. The command is in every build; since 65.5g the integrated help lists it everywhere too (up to 65.5f only in the Windows full builds).

Real-world examples

Everything into z:\nas.zip, then overwriting it

zpaqfranz zip z:\nas.zpaq
zpaqfranz zip z:\nas.zpaq -force

One folder, last version; a specific version

zpaqfranz zip z:\nas.zpaq /share/PUBLIC -to z:\public.zip
zpaqfranz zip z:\nas.zpaq -until 100 -to z:\v100.zip

The snapshots of versions 10 to 20

zpaqfranz zip z:\nas.zpaq -all -range 10:20 -to z:\10_20.zip

Compressed (sources, text)

zpaqfranz zip z:\src.zpaq -deflate -to z:\src.zip
