Settings and Backups

The Settings tab has three sub-tabs: This device, Campaigns and Files.

  • This device: settings for this phone or PC (below), the party, and this guide.
  • Campaigns: your games. The one you're playing shows its characters and rules (see Campaigns).
  • Files: everything you've made, backups (Import and Export everything) and erasing it all (see Files).

This device

Mode: Play or Edit

Play is for the table: your gear comes from the GM, shops, trades and treasure. It puts away the Catalog (Items keeps Shops), making and editing items, and a GM's shop, panel and table editing (shops still open and close, treasure is still given, panels still work). Only things that count in play go up and down (see Your Inventory). You can still rename your copies (Display name) and write in paper and books.

Edit lets you make and change everything. It's set per device.

The quickest way to switch is the Play / Edit switch in the top bar (see Getting Started#the-screens); this setting is the same one.

Role on this device

Player or GM. As GM you can prepare each campaign's shops, controls and values, and treasure without hosting a party; see Running the Game. In a party, the host decides who's a GM.

In the same card, Rename sets what this device is called in parties (the host sees devices by name).

Animations

How smoothly moving icons animate on this device: clocks, and icons following a value as it changes (see Drawn Icons). Smooth, Balanced (to start with), Low or Off (they show still). Only icons on screen animate, and the app slows them down by itself when the device is busy (many moving icons at once), then speeds them up again: they get choppier, never slower, and the rest of the app stays quick.

Sounds

On, Quiet or Off: the sounds interactive drawings make when you touch them (a drum, a die's rattle). They play only on the device that's touched.

Full-colour drawings

Drawings in their own colours (see Drawn Icons) show their item's type colour behind them in lists, so they still sort by colour: Plate (a soft disc, to start with), Outline (round the drawing) or None. Plate size (or Outline size): Small, Medium or Large. A list's View menu can turn it off for that list (its Plate or Outline chip), as does turning off Type colour. The item's details show the drawing without it.

Wide screens

How the app uses a screen wider than 1300 pixels. Use the room (to start with): the inventory's panels sit beside its list, an item's details open in a panel on the right (see Your Inventory), the catalog's templates run down the side, and GM panels sit side by side. One column: centred, as on a narrower screen. Phones and narrower windows always use one column.

A wide screen: the panels, the list, and an item's details docked on the right

Party

In the Windows and Android apps, Host a party and Join someone else's party; in a party, the address others join at, and Stop hosting or Leave party. In a browser, how to host one. See Party Play.

Version and updates

The Version card says which version this is. Check for updates asks GitHub whether there's a newer one (only when you press it: the app works offline otherwise). If there is, it says so, with What's new, and how to get it on this device:

  • Windows app: Install and restart downloads it, checks it against GitHub's checksum, puts it in place of this one and restarts the app. Your data stays as it is. (If players are connected, it asks first: the restart stops the party.)
  • Android app: Download it downloads the new APK; Android asks to install it over this one. Your data stays as it is.
  • Web app: Reload loads the newest version.
  • A player's browser (it uses the host's copy), or a copy run from its source: Open the downloads.

Characters and rules

They belong to a campaign, so they're on its card in Settings → Campaigns (see Campaigns):

  • Characters: make, rename, export, duplicate and delete the campaign's characters. Tap one to make it the active character (or use the name at the top of the screen). Move one to another campaign in Files.
  • Rules: Rules, values and controls (GM only: items' rules, Global and Local values, the GM's panels and Connections, and shops that follow values; off, they're put away for everyone in the campaign, and rules don't run, nor catch up when it's switched back on; item states, layers and limits stay; in a party the host passes it on), the Game system, Encumbrance (D&D 5e: Standard, carry STR × 15 lb; Variant, slower at STR × 5 and heavily encumbered at STR × 10; or Off) and Coins have weight (50 coins to the pound in D&D 5e).

A character's Carry multiplier (D&D 5e) is in the character panel, beside STR (see Your Inventory).

Backups

In Settings → Files:

  • Export everything saves everything (every campaign, rule package and drawing, and the pictures) as a file.
  • Import a file loads any file of the app. Importing a character adds it; importing everything replaces what's there (with Undo). Leave a party before restoring a full backup.
  • The download button on a character (in Files, or on its campaign's card) exports just that character, with the pictures and templates its items use.
  • The Data card at the end says where everything is saved, and has Erase everything on this device…: every campaign, character, rule package and drawing. Export first: it can't be undone.

Use Export and Import to move characters between devices.

Where your data is

Where you use the app Where it's saved
Windows app %APPDATA%\IsThisAMimic\my-data on that PC, shared by every window of the app there.
Android app The app's own storage on the phone.
Browser That browser only. Clearing its site data deletes it, so export backups.
In a party Your device, with a live copy on the host.

The party itself (its characters' copies, trades, shops, values and treasure being shared) is saved on the host.
