Some people ask: Can I create a Head or WingSet for The ExoBass and release it?

The answer is: Yes! I would love it if you did!

However, there are some rules:

You can only release the Head / WingSet files you create and you must link to the CrowdFunding Campaign for how people can get access to the Core. If you want to make Remixes of any of the core files, please send them to me so I can release them under the campaign. You must use the "ExoBass" name in your model's titles. Here are some Template files for you to get started:

How to Create a Wing Set

Step 1: Design your WingSet

Let's say you're designing a new WingSet. This guide will start from the point in the process where you have designed it and we will work on adapting it for ExoBass. Here is your WingSet:

First, bring in the Reserved Airspace and the Negative:

Position them so that the Bridge and Neck are where you want them to be, and that that the bottom of the reserved airspace is touching the face of your bass.

Step 2: Subtract Negative

Make sure your negative is in the correct position.

Then subtract it from your WingSet

Step 3: Ensure Access to Core Interfaces

There are a couple of important interfaces that you need to maintain access too:

Step 3a - Ensure Access to Mounting Screws

The first is the Mounting Screws that attach the core to the 2020. These need to be accessible up until the WingSet is attached to the core, and can be covered after that if you so desire. The access to these must be reachable with a screwdriver.

There are 6 on the back and one on the bottom.

Since the example WingSet is 40mm Thick, this lines up perfectly with the ones on the back, but we need to allow access to the one on the bottom:

Step 3b - Ensure Access to Heat Set Inserts

The second is the Heat Set Inserts that the pickups attach too. They only need to be accessible after printing so that the inserts can be installed.

In my example, I will be splitting the WingSet in half at the point that the Heat Set Inserts need to be installed. I will later use screws to attach the front and back to each other.

Step 4 - Control Panel

Design your control panel.

For the jack you should use 12mm holes through 2mm of material with 25mm of diameter free on the back of it.

For the pickups you should use 7mm holes through 2-5mm of material. Make sure they are at least 30mm apart and not in the way of the jack.

Make sure to leave yourself a cavity for you to put the extra wire into.

Step 4b - Wire Channels

Wires from the bridge need to be able to get to the control panel, so make sure you put in voids for cables to run through. I suggest that these channels be 12mm in diameter so you can pass through cables with plugs on the end.

Step 5 - Strap Mounts

Put in your Strap Mounts. This consists of a M3 Flanged Heat Set Insert and a M3x16 SHCS. You can use these models to put in one like the one that was used in HipBone.

Step 5a - Pull in Strap Mount and Negative

Step 5b - Subtract Negative from WingSet

Step 5c - End Result

Step 6 - Chunkitize

Break apart all of the large models into pieces that will fit on a 250x250x240 build area. You are welcome to go the extra mile and make sure it works on an A1 Mini, but this makes it far more difficult.

You may decide to add new hardware for this part. If you do, make sure to release an itemized BOM with your WingSet that has links people can go to to get the parts. Also, make sure to send this to Spikeon Studio so they can add these items to the DIY kits.

Step 7 - Finesse

At this point, I always go through and think about how I'm going to end up orienting these pieces on the build plate and then make sure the faces that touch the build plate don't have any sharp edges. This will save you time when printing as the toolhead won't have to stop as many times and will also help your large parts stay attached to the bed.

Step 8 - Bring it all back together

Come up with a solution to re-attach all of the chunks to each other in a sturdy way. You can do this however you want. You can use screws (CW2), Dowel Pins (Bass of Spades), Just plain Glue with indexing inserts (HipBone), or anything else you want.

I will do this documentation using BT3x20 screws.

Here is a negative file for M3 / BT3 screws that go 30mm deep. You want the hole to go deeper than the screw.

Step 8a - Position Screw Negatives

You want the negative to go under the top of the back of the bass by at least 2-3mm.

Step 8b - Boolean Subtract Screw Negatives.

Step 9 - Plate, print, assemble

First make sure you have a note pad handy and a fresh page titled "Issues with [WingSet Name]" ready to go.

Plate your design in Bambu Studio. Make sure to use AT LEAST 5 walls, 7 top surfaces, 7 bottom surfaces, and 55% Adaptec Cubic Infill for strength.

Then Print your design! Make note of any parts that come off of the bed or warp so you can make sure to add brims to them in the final .3mf file.

Finally, Assemble your design. Make notes of ANY issues you come across during assembly, no matter how minor. Also, it's a good idea to document how you assemble it as you're assembling it.

Example Wing Set Plated

Step 10 - Final Adjustments

Using your notes, make changes to the models. Then plate the new models and make any needed changes to the brims.

Repeat steps 9 and 10 until no more adjustments need to be made.

Step 11 - BOM

Create a BOM for your wingset that includes any hardware added in Step 8 as well as:

Qty Name Url
14 M3x5x4 Heat Set Inserts Amazon
6 M5x20 BHCS Amazon
1 M6x20 SHCS Amazon

Step 12 - Documentation

Create a step-by-step documentation guide (like this one) with detailed steps for how to assemble. Provide either pictures or exploded views of each step.

Step 13 - Release

Release the files wherever you want, just follow these rules:

  • You must title your release with the prefix "ExoBass - "
  • At the top of your description you must link to the ExoBass campaign page and let people know that they can get the core files for the bass there.

You do NOT have to:

  • Mark your project as a Remix of ExoBass
  • Send Spikeon Studio buckets of money (unless you really want too)

Step 14 - Done!
