Agenda

Notes are integrated into the agenda

Old Business

  • Proposed discussion of issues raised at the previous meeting about how the ICC will put support structures in place as changes are made at the Islandora Foundation after new business and updates.

New Business

  • Welcome to Jenna (she'll be joining around 11 Eastern)
  • Call for proposals for SWIB2021 - online again - focus on semantic web and linked data.
    • With Danny gone, we will rely on community members to carry the conference presentation circuit.
    • ICC should consider sharing a list of conferences where Islandora presentations would fit well, and recruiting for presentations.

Interest Group Updates

  • Metadata IG (Rosie) -- no MIG meeting; at MIG co-conveners meeting prioritized results from survey
  • IR interest group (Don) -- at meeting of July 15, prioritized thinking about sample IR site and IR contents.
  • ISLE Interest Group (Danny) -- ISLE on alpha 8 release, fixed bugs from release testing. Release testing shows bugs were in ISLE not Islandora. Gavin Morris did a security release, will do a security release next month for ISLE 7
  • Documentation Interest Group (Mirko) -- at meeting of July 14 discussed integrating the Islandora Cookbook more closely with official documentation, hope to make that documentation more relevant and incentivize broader contributions. Also, discussed emphasizing Drupal prerequisites for I8 users in documentation going forward and beginning to collect ideas related to that emphasis. Raised as discussion point for the ICC: what would be the value of a comparison table of features between Islandora 7 and Islandora 8 as part of documentation.
    • Question of the appropriate level of granularity and intended audience of such documentation
    • Suggestion that differentiation between features that are default, easy with recipes, simple customization, or extensive customization could help both new users and user migrating from Islandora 7
    • Feature table could be valuable in the larger context of migration informaiton
    • Proposal to take feature table back to DIG to model and refine iteratively

Islandora 8

  • Testing sprint completed. Work is under way to prepare final release versions, hoping to incorporate Willow's work on Google Scholar tokens for final release.

Islandora Events

Summer of Islandora - July 27

  • have 3 presentations planned: Dara and Amy on migration, Rosie on views, and Bethany on Access Control and workflows for Drupal's Workbench (note that this is not the same as Mark Jordan's Islandora Workbench)
  • looking for ideas to possibly fill time or interest groups that may want to come and speak or talk about what they've been working on?
    • interest in plugging Interest Groups at July meeting

Start to look at planning for August?

  • there are two confirmed demos, UT Scarborough on Annotation and Utility displays, Born Digital (Dara Virks) on multilingual sites.
  • There are lists of suggested demos or topics, including the jamboard that was made available at the first Summer of Islandora meeting.
  • Suggestion to put together a panel of folks who can answer questions about community engagement, such as someone from each interest group. Plan to firm that up at the next ICC meeting for the August 31 Open Meeting.
  • Suggestion to create a web presence for the Summer of Islandora such as a page on the Wiki to make it easier to find.
  • Still need suggestions for another technical demo for August 31.

Introductions

Welcome Jenna Mlynaryk! She is taking over the part-time role that Arran Griffith has been filling at the Islandora Foundation starting next week. Thank you to Arran for this work up until now!

Round Table

No individual news for Round Table.

Discussion

How can ICC implement/manage interim and long-term support structures to make sure collaboration between Islandora stakeholders happens?

  • technical and also political/interpersonal aspects of this work
  • Is the ICC where responsibility lies for roadmapping? If so, how? If not, where?
    • There are individual roadmaps (under development) for specific areas such as IR, preference for splitting things up for development
    • consideration of how to define user requirements and then figuring out who will work on it and incorporating into a larger plan. How would that fit in a roadmap?
    • Want to have a feedback loop with users, so that input is not just from committers. Always need to consider a mechanism for people to do the work -- even if there's a roadmap, the implementation needs to happen.
  • Are open meetings a good venue to encourage bottom-up suggestions and priorities for development, recruitment?
    • Challenge is to maintain momentum for people to participate in the open meetings. Structured, consistent, concise set of questions could frame discussion at open meetings.
    • Could there be a flow chart of how to get an idea incorporated?
    • Could we institute a step before shopping around an idea for development where there is workshopping around the definition of the problem? That would help to identify similar needs and broader use cases, and to define the requirements.
    • How could we make space (in meeting/user group/other infrastructure) to discuss the range of needs and solutions? Maybe open meeting brainstorming could be framed explicitly as the feature rather than the implementation of the feature.
    • Could we start discussions working from the more specific solutions to broader use cases, frame the conversation toward the roadmap and consider how others might reuse or generalize specific solutions?
  • Goal is to go beyond the first person out of the gate presents a solution and there's a layer of feedback or review, to get to "we all figure it out together and then we make it together"
    • Important to have a space for step 1, figuring out the requirements we're trying to solve, as well as a space for step 2, how to build that
  • Plan to discuss these issues in the August 31 open meeting, prepare in the interim.
