Concept and Mapping Proposals

Anyone can propose a new concept, a change to an existing one, or a new mapping.

How to send a proposal

Today: email the CIEL Director, Dr. Andrew Kanter, at ask2164@cumc.columbia.edu, with the details listed below. You can also open an issue in this repository.

Coming soon: Concept Proposals in OCL. Open Concept Lab is building a built-in feature (ocl_issues#2434) that will let signed-in users:

  • propose new concepts directly to a source such as CIEL;
  • follow the status of their own proposals;
  • let source administrators review, approve or reject each proposal.

It is not available yet. This page will point to it when it is released.

What to include

New concept

  • Name in English and a short description
  • Concept class (diagnosis, procedure, test, drug, finding, and so on) and datatype
  • Why it is needed (clinical or program use case)
  • Existing codes in other terminologies, if known
  • Names in other languages, if available
  • Is it similar to any existing CIEL concept?

Change to an existing concept

  • The concept ID or name
  • What should change and why

New or corrected mapping

  • The CIEL concept
  • The target terminology, code and relationship (for example SAME-AS, NARROWER-THAN, BROADER-THAN)
  • Supporting evidence

What happens next

  1. The proposal is reviewed by CIEL curators.
  2. Accepted proposals pass the Quality Assurance checks.
  3. They are included in the next monthly release. See Release Process.

CIEL excludes terminology that is prejudicial or discriminatory. See Governance.
