Mappings Updates

A mapping links a CIEL concept to a code in another terminology (SNOMED CT, ICD-10, ICD-11, RxNorm, ATC, LOINC, CVX and others). CIEL currently has mappings and uses several relationship types.

Relationship types

The three most important are:

Type Meaning
SAME-AS The codes mean the same thing
NARROWER-THAN The target is more specific than the CIEL concept
BROADER-THAN The target is more general than the CIEL concept

Other types describe clinical relationships, such as associated finding, finding site, causative agent or severity. Some concepts need more than one code to be expressed fully (post-coordination), notably with ICD-11 and SNOMED CT.

How mappings are updated

  • New mappings. Suggestions, from curators, files or the OCL Mapper, are held aside, reviewed by a curator, and only then added to CIEL.
  • Retired codes. When a reference terminology retires a code, CIEL finds the concepts that use it and updates the mapping.
  • Relationship review. SAME-AS mappings to reference codes are kept distinct from non-SAME-AS ones, and checked more strictly.
  • Quality checks. Every mapping change passes Quality Assurance.
  • Release. Updates ship in the next monthly release.

AI can propose and rank candidates. A human reviews every mapping before it is saved.
