Using FHIR

CIEL is FHIR compatible. Open Concept Lab exposes its content through the OCL FHIR Core API, a subset of the FHIR R4B Terminology Services specification, aligned with the IHE SVCM profile.

How CIEL maps to FHIR

In OCL In FHIR
Source (such as CIEL) CodeSystem
Collection (such as a starter set) ValueSet
Mappings ConceptMap

Supported operations

  • $lookup: get the details of a code
  • $validate-code: check that a code is valid
  • $expand: list the codes of a value set
  • $translate: translate a code through mappings

Getting started

  1. Create a free OCL account and get an API token.
  2. Send FHIR requests to https://fhir.openconceptlab.org/fhir/ with your token. Anonymous access is not available.
  3. The server's capabilities are described in its Capability Statement.

XML requests are also accepted. The FHIR API is in beta.
