Use Cases
CIEL began as the shared concept dictionary of OpenMRS. Implementers start from CIEL instead of building a dictionary, and can copy and customize a concept when they need to. See Using OCL for OpenMRS concept dictionary management.
A local term linked to CIEL reaches SNOMED CT, ICD, LOINC, RxNorm and more through CIEL's mappings. It's called CIEL Bridge, a whole integration suite ready to use into OCL Mapper. Try it at map.openconceptlab.org.
ICD-11 differs from ICD-10, notably through post-coordination. Forms, reports and analytics mapped to CIEL can move to ICD-11 by updating CIEL's mappings, without redoing every local mapping.
CIEL is available in the OHDSI/OMOP vocabulary, so data from LMICs can be normalized to the OMOP common data model and used in federated research.
CIEL, OpenMRS and OCL fit OpenHIE-based architectures, supplying shared terminology and standard codes across systems.
Names in many languages, with fallback to English, let one dictionary serve several countries. See Locales.
