Farming
Expanded Foodsystem adds seven field crops, five bushes and vines, a handful of herbs and spices, and Salt Ore. Where to find the first seeds is listed on Ingredient Sources.

Rice Seeds | Grows in water, see below |
Plant them on farmland like wheat. They grow with light and random ticks, and bone meal works on all of them. A ripe crop drops its harvest and some seeds back; a young one only gives the seed you planted.
Corn grows a second block on top once it is half grown. Breaking either half harvests the whole plant.
Rice doesn't grow on farmland. It needs a paddy:
- Dig a hole one block deep in dirt, grass, mud or farmland and fill it with a water source. The water must be exactly one block deep with air above it.
- Aim at the ground under the water and plant the rice seeds.
- The plant keeps the water in its block and grows two blocks tall. It needs light, nothing else.
A ripe plant drops 2 to 4 rice and some extra seeds. Breaking it leaves the water where it was, so you can replant right away. A long trench of water with a path between two rows works well as a rice field.
Rice planted on farmland in older versions stops growing. Harvest it and replant it in water.
| Plant | Planted from | Harvest |
|---|---|---|
|
|
Strawberry Seeds | 2–4 Strawberries |
|
|
Tea Seeds | 2–3 Tea Leaves |
|
|
Coffee Beans | 2–4 Coffee Beans |
|
|
Grape Seeds | 2–4 Grapes |
|
|
Hop Seeds | 2–3 Hops |
Plant them on dirt or grass. They grow through four stages; once fully grown, right-click to pick the harvest. The plant stays and grows back, so a few bushes are enough for a steady supply. Bone meal speeds them up. Breaking a bush gives you its seed back.
What to do with the harvest:
- Tea leaves: dry them on the Drying Rack for green tea, or ferment them in the Fermentation Barrel for black tea.
- Coffee beans: roast them in the Frying Pan, grind them in the Mortar, then brew coffee in the Cooking Pot.
- Grapes and hops: wine and beer in the Fermentation Barrel.
- Strawberries: smoothies, shakes, ice cream and cake.

Farmers sell all of them at some level, see Ingredient Sources. Herbs are not planted in the ground. Put the first one you find into a Herb Planter and it keeps producing copies. Cinnamon is the only spice that you always buy from farmers.
Salt Ore generates in the Overworld between Y -32 and Y 96, in stone and deepslate, in small veins. Mining it drops Raw Salt; smelt that in a furnace to get Salt. Salt is used in a lot of recipes, so it's worth keeping a stack around. Village chests and journeyman (level 3) farmers are good backup sources.
When Season System is installed, it decides in which seasons these crops grow and how fast. Without it, all crops grow all year like vanilla crops.
