Crop Profiles

Crop Profiles

Crop profiles decide in which seasons a crop grows. They are stored in:

config/seasonsystem-crops.json

The file is created on the first start with profiles for the vanilla crops and for the crops of the Expanded Food System mod. You can change these entries and add crops from any other mod.

Structure of an entry

Every entry starts with the item id of the seed or crop item (for example minecraft:wheat_seeds). This id controls the tooltip. Inside the entry you set these fields:

Field Values Meaning
best spring, summer, autumn, winter Season in which the crop grows fastest. fall also works.
grows list of seasons All seasons in which the crop can grow. If missing, only the best season is used.
needs_moisture_in_summer true / false The crop needs wet farmland in summer. If missing, it is true for crops that grow in summer.
winter_growth true / false The crop can grow in winter. true also adds winter to grows.
blocks list of block ids The placed crop blocks that follow these rules.

Example

An entry for tomatoes from another mod looks like this:

"expanded_foodsystem:tomato_seeds": {
  "best": "summer",
  "grows": ["spring", "summer"],
  "needs_moisture_in_summer": true,
  "winter_growth": false,
  "blocks": ["expanded_foodsystem:tomato_crop"]
}

This tomato:

  • grows fastest in summer,
  • grows in spring and summer, not in autumn or winter,
  • needs wet farmland in summer,
  • the placed block expanded_foodsystem:tomato_crop follows these rules.

A winter crop would use "best": "winter", "grows": ["winter"] and "winter_growth": true.

Item id and block id

A crop has two ids: the item you plant (seeds) and the block that grows in the field. They are often different, for example minecraft:wheat_seeds and minecraft:wheat.

  • The entry name (item id) is used for the tooltip.
  • The blocks list is used for the growth rules in the field.

Always fill in blocks with the exact block ids. If you leave it out, Season System tries to guess the block from the item name (for example tomato_seeds → tomato, tomato_crop or tomatos), but an exact entry is safer. You can also use the block id itself as the entry name.

Finding the ids: press F3 + H in game to show advanced tooltips; the item id is shown under the item name. For blocks, look at the placed crop with the F3 screen open; the block id is shown on the right side.

Crops without a profile

Crops that are not listed still follow the seasons. They behave like wheat: best in spring, growing in spring, summer and autumn, needing water in summer and resting in winter. They just do not show a tooltip.

Applying changes

After editing the file, run /season reloadcrops (or /season reloadconfig) or restart the server.

Common mistakes

  • Missing comma between two entries, or a comma after the last entry. The file must be valid JSON, otherwise no profiles are loaded and the server log shows a warning. An online JSON validator helps to find the mistake.
  • Wrong id: ids are written in lower case with the mod name in front, for example modname:tomato_seeds. Without a mod name, minecraft: is assumed.
  • Tooltip works but the crop still grows in the wrong season: the blocks list is missing or has the wrong block id.
  • To get the default file back, delete seasonsystem-crops.json and restart; it is created again.
