Temperature
Season System has a temperature in degrees Celsius. You can see it in the HUD, in the Season Journal and with /season temperature.
Every season has a temperature range:
| Season | Coldest | Warmest |
|---|---|---|
| Spring | 6 °C | 18 °C |
| Summer | 20 °C | 34 °C |
| Autumn | 5 °C | 17 °C |
| Winter | -12 °C | 2 °C |
Within a season, the temperature follows a soft curve: it is closest to the "coldest" value at the start and end of the season and reaches the "warmest" value around the middle. Every day varies by up to 2 °C, rain and snow make it a bit colder, and weather events can make it much warmer or colder.
The ranges can be changed in the Configuration#temperature.
The value in the HUD is the temperature of the season. What a player actually feels also depends on where they are and what they wear:
| Situation | Change |
|---|---|
| Hot biome (desert, savanna, badlands) | +6 °C |
| Jungle or swamp | +2 °C |
| Taiga, mountains, peaks | -3 °C |
| Snowy, frozen or icy biome | -6 °C |
| Night | -2 °C (summer: -3 °C) |
| Rain or snowfall | -3 °C (winter: -2 °C) |
| Under a roof or underground | -1 °C (summer: -4 °C, shade cools you down) |
| Very high up (Y 110 and above) | -2 °C |
| Swimming | -5 °C (summer: -8 °C) |
| Fire, lava or a campfire close by | +14 °C |
| Lantern, glowstone, shroomlight, froglight and similar close by | +8 °C |
| Torch, candle, furnace, smoker close by | +5 °C |
| Leather armour | +2 °C per piece |
| Wool or fur armour (from other mods) | +3 °C per piece |
"Close by" means about 4 blocks around you. Armour gives at most +10 °C.
When the felt temperature is too low or too high, players get effects:
| Felt temperature | Effect |
|---|---|
| 0 °C or colder | Slowness |
| -8 °C or colder | Slowness II and Mining Fatigue |
| 33 °C or hotter | Weakness |
| 39 °C or hotter | Weakness and Mining Fatigue |
- Cold effects only happen in winter, heat effects only in summer. Both can be turned off separately.
- Staying warm in winter: standing near any heat source (torch, lantern, campfire, furnace, ...) always keeps you above the cold limit.
- Torch in hand: holding a torch (also soul torch or copper torch) in either hand in winter keeps you warm and gives you Speed I.
- Caves in summer: deep underground you never get heat effects.
- Spectators are never affected.
All limits and the check interval can be changed in the Configuration#temperature. With temperature_effects_enabled=false players get no effects, and with temperature_system_enabled=false temperature has no gameplay effect at all.
With temperature_affect_crop_growth turned on (default), the temperature also changes crop growth:
| Temperature | Crop growth |
|---|---|
| -8 °C or colder | ×0.45 |
| 0 °C or colder | ×0.70 |
| 12 °C to 25 °C | ×1.08 |
| 33 °C or hotter | ×0.75 |
| 39 °C or hotter | ×0.55 |
| everything else | ×1.00 |
