[attempts] is the number of random spots to test, from 1 to 5000 (default 200). The spots lie within 64 blocks around you, in loaded chunks only.
For every spot, the command looks up which creatures the biome can spawn and runs the same checks the game uses for natural spawning: the right ground or water, light level, space for the creature and its own spawn rules. The result is a list like this:
wildcreatures:deer: 84/71
The first number says how often the deer was in the spawn list of the tested spots, the second how often the spot would really have allowed a deer to spawn. If the second number is 0 everywhere, something stops that creature from spawning there, for example a config switch, the wrong biome or a modded biome that is not in a vanilla biome tag.
Vanilla animals show up in the list too, which is handy for comparing.
Tip: fireflies only count as valid at night.
