Cerebus

A truly curious 300-issue small press success story, Dave Sim's Cerebus (not "Cerberus") began as a parodic sword-and-sorcery comic in 1977 starring the titular anthropomorphic aardvark. Its individual issues began being reprinted in large collected form (or "phonebooks") in 1986. Earlier years of the comic are lighter and more fun, while as the decades went on the author began burdening his creation with weightier topics and long essays, alienating many of his casual readers.

Despite all this, the character is a popular subject of underground ANSI art, especially in the [toon] idiom, courtesy of his very simple and straightforward design.
