FAQ (Frequently Answered Questions)
Once you know what the acronym FAQ stands for, you already know most of what you need to know about them.
FAQs were started on [UseNet] [newsgroup]s (I stand corrected: the practice actually began on ARPANET's SPACE mailing list in 1982, but the newsgroups were glad to adopt it) so the regulars could refer new participants to go [RTFM] rather than being expected to answer the same questions over and over again (just once annually, in September, until AOL got hooked up to UseNet, but I digress.) The purpose is to get ahead of expected and tediously rehashed questions already thoroughly covered by the newsgroup's patrons, and free them up for more rarefied discussions on their specialty interests.
This wiki was long envisioned as a FAQ before we realised that there were far too many Qs and none of them were actually asked all that F, so we might as well give each subject the ability to be covered in-depth without expecting anyone to have to go reading through the entire thing!
