A packaging refresh. Windows builds now use the MSVC toolchain, so the installer is smaller — the C++ runtime ships as small app-local files instead of a bundled ~25 MB redistributable, and the unused networking components are dropped. Qt is updated to 6.11.2, and the About dialog now reports the build compiler and platform ("Built with … for …"). No change to how the app works.
The render-correctness release: camera photos, mixed image types, and Windows re-render reliability.
- Camera photos now render the right way up. A photo taken in portrait (or any rotated orientation) used to render on its side or upside-down, sometimes with a black band and split across two files. Platemaker now reads each photo's rotation and renders it correctly — and such a photo also previews upright in the input list. Artwork exported from a drawing app was never affected; this fixes real camera/phone photos used as input. See Rendering.
- Mixing photos and screenshots no longer aborts a render. A folder combining ordinary photos (RGB) with images that carry transparency (RGBA) — e.g. a stray screenshot — used to kill the whole render. Such a mix now renders through; transparency is kept for PNG/WebP output and flattened over white for JPEG (which cannot carry it).
- Re-renders no longer fail with "unable to open for write" on Windows. An intermittent read/write race — most visible on the Webtoon profile, and behind the stale/black-band output previews — is closed. A slice that genuinely cannot be written (its file held open by another program) now reports cleanly instead of a cryptic error.
- Windows 10: the dark theme now applies to the whole window. On Windows 10 the forced dark scheme previously left the window shell (menu bar, docks, tabs) light while the dialogs stayed dark — an unreadable mix. The whole window now renders a consistent dark. Windows 11 is unchanged.
- Adding a canvas profile no longer turns a whole project amber. Creating a profile that matches no page in a project now leaves that project untouched, instead of marking every tile out of date with an alarming "state cannot be confirmed" prompt. When a canvas change does affect pages, the reopen dialog is titled Canvas profiles changed and lists each project with the exact page count it affects. See Canvas profiles.
- Detaching and re-docking a panel no longer breaks the layout. Floating the Workspace or Action panel out and snapping it back used to wreck the window; the panels now return to where they were.
- Fixed: a failed render shows a short Render failed — see the action log status; the full error stays in the log instead of filling the status line.
A small hardening-and-fixes release.
- Drag-and-drop works over the whole project panel, not just the input tile list — drop images or a folder anywhere on the panel and they are added. See Projects.
-
Windows version metadata —
Platemaker.exeand the bundledlibplatemaker.dllnow show a proper product name, version and publisher in Explorer's Details tab and tools like Process Explorer, instead of blanks. - Hardened DLL loading (Windows) — the app restricts its DLL search path at startup to the application folder and System32, closing a DLL-planting vector for an unsigned, DLL-heavy app. Defence-in-depth beneath (not a replacement for) code signing; it does not change the SmartScreen prompt. See Installation.
- libplatemaker moves to 0.4.1 (metadata only — no API change).
Built for publishing the same pages to more than one platform, with better visibility into what a render produced.
- "New from this…" project action — the Workspace-panel right-click menu can seed a new project from an existing one, copying its input files and profile links but not its outputs or output directory. Made for the multi-publisher workflow: two projects over the same pages that differ only in their output profile. See Projects.
- Render summary in the action log — a finished render now reports the slice and input counts, elapsed time, the heaviest slice, and the total output size, so you can check a chapter against a platform's size cap without opening the folder. See Rendering.
-
Render logs are saved — each run's log is written to
<workspace>/.platemaker-cache/logs/(last 10 kept), so a failing render's log survives for review or a bug report. The action log also gained a right-click menu (copy, save, open output/log folder, clear). - "Unverified" input state — an input that was rendered but whose file could not be read back afterwards (locked, denied, or on an offline drive) now shows a distinct rose tile instead of being silently reprocessed every render. See File statuses.
- Restyled progress bar, an About dialog banner, and the full third-party notices for the bundled runtime now reachable from the About dialog.
- Fixed: the window/taskbar icon no longer disappears when the app is launched from outside its install folder.
Undo, drag-and-drop, more platform presets, and a readable interface in light mode.
-
Undo / Redo across the app (
Ctrl+Z/Ctrl+Y), via Undo / Redo at the bottom of the Workspace menu. It covers input edits (add / remove / clear / reorder / sort, profile links, output profile and directory) and workspace edits (rename a project; create, edit or delete canvas and output profiles; generate or delete templates). Each open project has its own history and the workspace has one; the shortcuts act on whichever tab is in front. Adding or removing a project is not undoable, and a render is never recorded. See Menu reference. - Drag files or a folder onto the Input list to add them — the same as Add files / Add all files from directory, and as one undoable step. See Projects.
- Five more output presets — alongside Webtoon Standard the catalogue now ships Tapas, NAMICOMI, GlobalComix, Popjoy and ComicFury, each sized to produce an uploadable file for that platform. See Output profiles.
-
Ctrl+Ralso renders the current project — an alternate forF5. - The Auto-sort rules panel is greyed out with a "Coming soon" label, so it no longer invites input that does nothing.
- Readable in light mode — the app was designed dark but followed the OS theme, so a light OS theme left light text on light backgrounds. It now forces its dark scheme regardless of the OS setting. (This raised the build requirement to Qt 6.8.)
The release that stops pages going missing and makes reordering real.
- Pages that match no canvas profile are no longer dropped. Such a page now renders anyway, without a margin crop, and its tile turns cyan ("Processed (no canvas profile)") so it is obvious it went through uncropped. If a matching profile exists in the workspace but was not assigned to the project, the log says so. See Canvas profiles.
- "Skipped" now means only a missing or unreadable file — shown violet, and it survives a reopen instead of quietly reverting. See File statuses.
- Reordering inputs finally affects the render. Drag-and-drop and the tile ▲ / ▼ buttons (which now work) change the order the strip is built in, and a reorder correctly marks the output out of sync — even after a save and reopen. See Projects.
- Live tile status during a render — input tiles update as each page is processed, not only when the run finishes.
- Add all files from directory re-opens the last-used folder.
- Profile edits refresh every open project at once, with no need to press Refresh files.
- A project with a permanently-skipped page no longer re-renders on every open.
- Refresh files touches only outputs, so a render's input statuses are no longer reset by it.
- Richer About dialog — component versions and licences reported by the library at runtime (libvips at the actually-loaded version), clickable licence texts and project links, and a machine-readable Software Bill of Materials shipped with the installer. See About.
- Output profile presets are no longer stored in your workspace — they live in the app and are referenced by id, so you cannot end up with a stray duplicate; older workspaces are migrated on open. The Webtoon Standard preset is JPEG (quality 90, 4:4:4). See Output profiles.
- Workspace repair notice — if two profiles are found sharing an internal identifier on open, one is given a new one and a dialog explains what changed. See Workspaces.
- Output profile presets marked read-only — "Webtoon Standard" is labelled (preset) with Edit and Delete disabled; duplicate it to make a version you can change.
- Projects under a non-ASCII path work (fixed in libplatemaker 0.2.1) — a workspace under a localised folder such as the Polish "Mój dysk" could previously be saved but not reopened.
- A canvas profile could not be assigned to a project — fixed.
- The minimum library version is now enforced at configure time.
- Batch render — "Refresh all projects" (F6) — renders every project in one sweep, incrementally. See Rendering.
- Out-of-sync warning on open — explains why tiles are amber rather than leaving you guessing.
- About dialog — component versions and licences.
- Cancelling a render keeps the slices already written.
- Canvas profile edits are now visible — pages whose profile changed are marked amber.
