OCI FastConnect vs IPSec VPN
Both connect an on-premises network to OCI, but they use different paths.
Simple definition
FastConnect: A dedicated, private connection between your data centre and OCI.
IPSec VPN: An encrypted connection to OCI through the public Internet.
FastConnect does not use the public Internet.
It supports:
Private peering: Access VCN resources using private IP addresses.
Public peering: Access OCI public services without sending traffic over the Internet.
Which one should you choose?
Choose FastConnect when:
Applications require stable latency.
Large amounts of data are transferred.
Workloads are business-critical.
Predictable bandwidth is required.
Internet-based connectivity is unacceptable.
Choose IPSec VPN when:
You need quick connectivity.
Traffic volume is moderate.
Budget is limited.
The environment is temporary or used for testing.
You need backup connectivity for FastConnect.
Use both connections
FastConnect normally carries the traffic. If it fails, routing can move traffic to the IPSec VPN. Oracle recommends a route-based VPN with BGP when it is used as FastConnect backup
