Lab:33 Custom Route table RT
A Route Table is a collection of routing rules that determines where network traffic should be forwarded based on its destination. It mainly controls the path for outgoing traffic from a subnet to destinations such as other VCNs, the Internet, on-premises networks, or OCI services..
Usage of Route Table
- Connect internet
- Connect private networks
- Send traffic to firewall/NAT gateway
- Control network path
Real-World Example — Home Delivery
Your house = Server
Roads = Network
Google Maps = Route Table
When delivery boy wants to reach your home:
Route table tells:
“Take Highway → Main Road → Street”
Without route table:
❌ Traffic gets lost
Subnet → Route Table → Gateway → Internet
In OCI, there are mainly two types:
Default Route Table
Custom Route Table
When you create a VCN (Virtual Cloud Network), OCI automatically creates a default route table.
It contains basic routing rules.
Features
- Automatically created by OCI
- Common/shared routing
- Easy for beginners
- Used by default subnets
Example
0.0.0.0/0 → Internet Gateway
A route table manually created by the user for specific routing needs.
Features
- User-defined routes
- Better traffic control
- More secure
- Different rules for different subnets
Example
10.0.0.0/16 → DRG 0.0.0.0/0 → NAT Gateway
