Import and Export
Move your notes in and out of OpenNote. Beta 4 has import and export for Markdown, Office formats, Obsidian notebooks, and more. Everything except start-up is untested by hand, so check the test checklist before you rely on a feature.
Your notes are never locked in. A page already keeps a readable page.md copy, and a whole notebook exports in one step.
Export a page, a section, or a whole notebook.
| Format | Status |
|---|---|
| Markdown | Built. Also a readable copy on every save. |
| HTML | Built. "Export as web page" writes one self-contained file, with ink as vector graphics. A notebook can export as linked pages. |
Word (.docx) |
Built. Text, tables, images, ink, and more. |
| Built. Matches the paginated view. See Page views, printing, and PDF. | |
Excel (.xlsx) and CSV |
Built. From smart tables. |
PowerPoint (.pptx) |
Built. One page per slide. |
| PNG, SVG, and image | Built. Export a page or selection as an image. |
| Anki and CSV | Built. For flashcard decks. |
| Audio file | Built. Export a recording as an audio file. |
| Share as a file | Not yet. One file that opens in OpenNote, with structure, tags, properties, and optionally history. |
Each export gets a short report. Locked sections stay out unless you open them first.
| Source | What comes over | Phase |
|---|---|---|
| Markdown folders | Obsidian and Joplin exports | 11 |
Evernote (.enex) |
Notes and attachments | 11 |
| OneNote, through the Microsoft Graph API | Page layout, ink, images, and attachments | 11 |
OneNote files on disk (.onepkg, .one) |
No sign-in needed. Text, tables, images, files, tags, and ink where the format allows. | 11 |
| Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files |
.docx, .odt, .xlsx, .csv, and .pptx. Slides become pages you can write on. |
11 |
| Notion, Google Keep, Bear, and Logseq | Notion Markdown and CSV, Keep exports from Takeout, Bear TextBundle files, and Logseq folders | 11 |
| Windows Sticky Notes | Text, colors, and dates from this PC, with no account | 11 |
Calendar files (.ics) |
Classes, exam dates, and due dates | 11 |
| Anki decks and CSV | Flashcards with their images | 10 |
| PDFs and scans | Highlight text on imported PDF pages, and clean up photos of pages | 11 |
Each import lands in its own notebook, with a report for every page that says what came over, what was simplified, and what was skipped. Original created and modified dates are kept. "Undo this import" removes the whole import in one step.
"Add note space" widens slides or PDF pages with a ruled or blank margin, or lays out 2 or 3 slides per page like a handout.
"Open with OpenNote" on a Markdown or text file opens it as a page and saves back to the same file. The file isn't moved, copied, or renamed.
Planned for Phase 11, and optional. You can link a Google or Microsoft account. Sign-in uses the provider's own secure page, and tokens stay in Windows Credential Manager. The "Send to" menu converts a page to PDF, Word, or Google Docs and uploads it to a Drive or OneDrive folder you choose. Nothing uploads without an explicit action.
Other planned connections include calendars, to-do apps, email, web clippers, and a local API. An app that connects through the local API gets its own permission, starts read-only on one notebook, and appears in an access log.
