Page views, printing, and PDF

Choose how your page looks and print or export it. Beta 4 has infinite and paginated page views, paper backgrounds, printing, PDF export, and slide presentations. Everything except start-up is untested by hand, so check the test checklist before you rely on a feature.

Page views

Feature Status
Infinite canvas or paginated Built. Switch each page between an endless canvas and sheets in Letter, A4, or custom sizes.
Margins and page breaks Built. Shows visible margins and where pages break.
Manual page breaks Built. Start a new sheet where you choose.
Keep together Built. Keeps an image or table on one sheet.
Default paper size Built. Set a size for each notebook.
Sheet navigator Built. A strip of sheet thumbnails and a "Go to sheet" command. Writing past the last sheet adds a new one.
Paper and backgrounds Built. Choose paper (blank, lined, grid, or dot) with backgrounds (white, warm, cream, sepia, or dark).
Reading aids Built. A line focus band, soft page tints, extra spacing, and a maximum line width. These change only the display.
Page gallery Built. A thumbnail of every page in a section.
Slide presentation Built. Split a page at its headings and show each part full screen.
Laser pointer and fading ink Built. Point to elements and watch ink fade for a presentation.
Syllable counting Built. Show syllables in text for reading instruction.

Paper backgrounds

Plain, ruled, grid, dot grid, isometric, and Cornell notes. More presets include lab notebook, music staff, planner, and storyboard. Ruled spacing comes in narrow (6 mm), college (7 mm), and wide (8.7 mm), and there are custom sizes. You can save and share your own templates.

Printing and PDF

  • Print and PDF export match the paginated view exactly. Print preview shows what will print, with page breaks.
  • Ink stays as sharp vector graphics, so handwriting stays crisp at any zoom.
  • Exported PDFs carry structure tags for headings, lists, tables, reading order, alt text, and language, so screen readers can follow them.
  • Export runs in the background, so typing and drawing never stall.

Export a selection

Lasso any area, then choose "Export selection" to save it as PDF, PNG, SVG, or .docx, or copy it as an image. Smart select grows the lasso to include whole strokes, text boxes, and images that it only partly touches. This also works on annotated images.

How close is the match?

In Phase 1, exported pages matched the screen to within 1 pixel, once two layout rules were followed. Still to do: printing on paper and measuring it, and opening the PDFs in other viewers. See Phase 1 spike results and the PDF export decision record.
