Notebooks, sections, and pages

OpenNote organizes notes the way OneNote does. Beta 4 has full notebook management, Trash with restore, undo, page history, and more. Everything except start-up is untested by hand, so check the test checklist before you rely on a feature.

How notes are organized

Level What it is
Notebook A folder of related notes, such as a course or a project
Section A group of pages inside a notebook
Section group A folder of sections inside a notebook
Page One note, where you write, draw, and record

On disk, a notebook is a folder, each section is a subfolder, and each page is a folder of its own. You can open your notes in another app at any time.

Keeping notes safe

Saves are atomic. OpenNote writes a temporary file, flushes it to disk, and then renames it, so a crash can't leave half a page. Autosave runs one second after your last change. A small journal lets OpenNote recover after a crash. The goal is to lose at most 1 second of work if the app or the PC stops suddenly.

Every note file carries a version number. When a new OpenNote changes the format, tested migrations upgrade old files.
