Pistons and Gates
Pistons that hide in a wall, secret blocks that pistons can move, and the Secret Gate, which grows a hidden wall, bridge or door out of a single block.

A vanilla piston inside a disguised block. Built into a wall, it looks like the wall, and so does its head when it pushes out.
| Result | Ingredients |
|---|---|
| Secret Piston | Dummy Block + Piston |
| Secret Sticky Piston | Dummy Block + Sticky Piston |
Both are shapeless. See Crafting.
- It takes its look from the block you place it against, like every secret block. See How disguises work.
- It faces the way a vanilla piston would when you place it.
- It follows vanilla's piston rules:
- the same power rules, quasi-connectivity included;
- it pushes up to 12 blocks, and refuses a 13th;
- the sticky one pulls its block back when it retracts;
- the move takes 2 ticks;
- the same sounds.
- The head is disguised too. When it pushes out, the head is a full block with the same look as the base.
- Nothing vanilla shows while it moves. No wooden piston face and no rod: only the disguise slides out and back.
- If you change the base's look with the Switch Probe while it is pushed out, the head takes the new look too.
- Breaking the head breaks the base, and breaking the base removes the head. Only the piston drops.
- The head drops nothing. Pick-block on the head gives you the piston.
- It sounds, mines and stands up to explosions like the block it looks like, as every secret block does, and it always drops itself when mined. See How disguises work.
- Like a vanilla piston, it does not pass redstone power through itself.
- Another piston can push or pull it only while it is retracted, as with vanilla pistons. It keeps its look when moved.
- The base and the head are both full blocks, pushed out or not. A vanilla piston's pushed-out base is shorter, and its head is a thin plate on a rod.
- The head collides as a full block while it moves, too.
- The head wears the base's disguise, and the move shows only the disguise.
Everything else works like vanilla's piston and sticky piston.
Pistons, vanilla and secret, can move most full secret blocks. A moved block keeps its look on every face, including any face you changed or rotated with the probes. Slime blocks drag them along like any other block.
These blocks move and keep their disguise:
- Dummy Block, Ghost Block, One Way Glass, Secret Clamber
- Secret Stairs and Secret Slab (a double slab moves as one)
- Secret Trapdoor and Secret Iron Trapdoor (they stay open or closed)
- Secret Observer
- Secret Piston and Secret Sticky Piston, only while retracted
These break and drop themselves, as their vanilla versions do:
- Secret Door and Secret Iron Door
- Secret Button, Secret Stone Button and Secret Lever
- Every secret pressure plate
- Secret Redstone Dust, Secret Redstone Wire, Secret Repeater and Secret Comparator
- The Torch Lever, which pops off like a torch
These stop the piston:
- Secret Chest, Secret Trapped Chest, Secret Dispenser, Secret Dropper and Secret Hopper
- Secret Sculk Sensor and Secret Daylight Detector
- Secret Gate and Secret Gate Segments
- A Secret Piston that is pushed out, and its head
Every secret block that has a vanilla version meets a piston the way that vanilla block does. The Secret Redstone Wire, which has none, breaks like vanilla dust.

A disguised block that builds a line of blocks out of itself while it is powered, and takes them away when the power stops. Use it for a hidden wall, a door that closes a passage, or a bridge that appears over a gap.
Dummy Block + Piston + Redstone Dust, shapeless. See Crafting.
- It takes its look from the block you place it against. See How disguises work.
- It faces away from the block you placed it on. Placed on a floor, it builds a pillar upward. Placed against a wall, it builds a bridge straight out from the wall.
- Placed without power, it does nothing.
- Powered, it builds a line of up to 9 Secret Gate Segments in the direction it faces. Any redstone signal reaching it from any side powers it.
- Every segment has the gate's look, so the line looks like a row of the gate's block.
- The whole line appears at once. A gate placed next to a power source builds a moment after it is placed.
- When the power stops, every segment goes. Nothing drops.
- Breaking the gate removes its segments too. Only the gate drops.
The line ends just before the first of these:
- a block you could not build over (stone, planks, glass and so on);
- another Secret Gate;
- the top or bottom of the world.
These hold the line back for now. The gate tries again every second while it is powered, and the line finishes once the way is clear:
- a player, a mob or anything else that would stop you placing a block there;
- another gate's segment;
- a chunk that is not loaded (the gate never loads chunks).
- Water, lava, grass, snow layers and other blocks you can build over are replaced. Nothing drops, and they do not come back when the line goes.
- A Secret Gate Segment has no item. You cannot craft it, pick it with pick-block, or get it from breaking.
- You can break a segment by hand. It drops nothing, and while the gate is powered it comes back about a second later. The rest of the line stays up.
- Pistons cannot push or break segments, and cannot move the gate either.
- Like the other secret redstone blocks, the gate and its segments do not pass redstone power through them.
- A segment whose gate is gone, closed, or not in line with it removes itself within about a second. This clears up segments copied with
/cloneor placed with/setblock.
A line can switch on other gates:
- the gate the line runs into;
- a gate just past the end of a full 9-block line;
- a gate touching the side of a new segment.
Each of those opens a moment later and builds its own line, which can open more gates.
- When the first gate closes, the gates it opened close too. A gate that is powered itself stays open.
- Turning off a gate's own power closes it, even if another gate had opened it.
- Gates facing each other, or a ring of gates, settle down. They do not flicker or loop.
- If two powered gates face each other, the first line to arrive stops at the other's segments. When you switch one off, the other finishes its line within a second.
- A gate opened by two other gates closes as soon as the first of the two closes.
- If you remove the block that stopped a line, the line does not grow. Switch the gate off and on again.
- Segments keep the look they were built with. If you change the gate's look while it is open, switch it off and on to update them.
There is no vanilla gate. The Camouflage Wand cannot convert the Secret Gate, and the Builder's Goggles show it and its segments only as faded blocks.
