Tools

Items for dressing secret blocks, finding them, and building with them.

Switch Probe and Rotator Probe

The probes change how a secret block looks, one face at a time. The Switch Probe copies a block's look and pastes it onto a face. The Rotator Probe turns a face's texture.

Crafting

The Switch Probe is shaped: Secret Goggles directly above a Trident. The recipe uses up the goggles. See Crafting.

The Rotator Probe has no recipe. You switch a Switch Probe into one (see below).

Copying a look

  • Use an empty Switch Probe on any block. It stores that block and the face you clicked.
  • The face you click is the texture you will paste. Click the top of a log to copy its rings, or its side to copy the bark.
  • Used on a secret block while empty, it copies the block shown on the face you clicked.
  • A loaded probe used on any block that is not secret copies that block instead. There is no need to empty it first.

Pasting it onto a face

  • Use a loaded Switch Probe on a face of a secret block. That face, and only that face, takes the stored look.
  • The probe stays loaded, so you can paste the same look onto as many faces as you like.
  • To change every face of a block, paste onto each face in turn.
  • A face shows stone if the stored block has no full face on that side, such as a fence or a glass pane. See How disguises work.
  • On a secret block that does something when you use it (a door, lever, button, chest or repeater), sneak while you use the probe. Otherwise the block opens, flips or changes instead.
  • Probe changes are saved with the world, and other players see them.

Rotator Probe

  • Use it on a face of a secret block to turn that face's texture a quarter turn.
  • Four uses bring it back to where it started.
  • It does nothing on blocks that are not secret.

Switching between the two

  • Hold a probe, sneak and use it while pointing at nothing, for example at the sky.
  • A Switch Probe becomes a Rotator Probe, and a Rotator Probe becomes a Switch Probe.
  • The new probe is empty: any stored look is lost. Switching twice is also how you empty a Switch Probe.

Secret Goggles

A wall through the Secret Goggles: every secret block striped

A pair of goggles that shows you every secret block nearby.

Crafting

Shaped, 3×3: an Eye of Ender in two opposite corners, a Prismarine Shard in the other two corners, Camouflage Paste on the four edges, and a Heart of the Sea in the center. See Crafting for the layout.

Each End City chest also has a 10% chance to hold a pair.

Wearing them

  • Use them to put them on, or place them in your helmet slot.
  • They give no armor.
  • While you wear them, every secret block in view shows moving rainbow stripes on each of its disguised faces.
  • Doors and trapdoors show the stripes on their own panels.
  • The stripes do not show through walls. You see them only on blocks you can see.
  • Only you see the stripes. Other players see the blocks as usual.
  • The stripes appear and disappear as soon as you put the goggles on or take them off.
  • The Torch Lever is not disguised, so it shows no stripes.
  • Worn, they look like a rainbow visor in a brass frame with a leather strap.

Durability, repair and enchanting

  • Durability 900. While worn, there is a 20% chance each second to lose 1 point. On average a pair lasts about 75 minutes of wear.
  • They only wear down on your head, never in your inventory.
  • They break at 0.
  • In creative mode they do not wear down.
  • Repair them at an anvil with a Prismarine Shard, or combine two pairs in a crafting grid or an anvil.
  • Enchanting: only Unbreaking and Mending apply, from books at an anvil. The enchanting table offers nothing for them.
  • In creative mode an anvil accepts any book on them, as it does for any item.

Builder's Goggles

The Builder's Goggles' view switched on, off and on again with its key

Goggles for building and fixing secret builds. They show every secret block's real block, so you can see the wiring behind a hidden wall.

Getting them

They have no recipe and are not found in chests. Take them from the Secret Blocks tab of the creative inventory, or use:

/give @p secretblocks:builders_goggles

Wearing them

  • Use them to put them on, or place them in your helmet slot.
  • They give no armor.
  • They never wear down, and they cannot be enchanted or repaired.
  • Worn, they look like the Secret Goggles.

What you see

While you wear them, every secret block nearby changes:

  • Its disguise fades to about 40%, so you can see into it.
  • Its real block shows inside, solid. You see the wire's shape, the repeater's arrow and delay, the comparator's mode, which way a piston faces, and the daylight detector's mode.
  • A thin, bright light-blue outline runs around each face of the disguise. Without it, a door, a trapdoor or a full-size block like a dispenser would look like its plain vanilla block.

Some blocks show differently:

  • Secret Chests and Secret Trapped Chests show a vanilla chest facing north. The trapped one has its red latch.
  • A chest set into a wall is lit like the room you see it from. In a dark room it is dark like the walls.
  • A pushed-out Secret Piston shows a vanilla piston head inside its head.
  • Blocks with several vanilla versions show the usual one. Every Secret Door shows an oak door, even one made from a spruce door.
  • Doors and trapdoors are outlined as their panels. A door's two halves share one outline.
  • Blocks with no vanilla version show only the faded disguise and the outline: the Dummy Block, Ghost Block, One Way Glass, Secret Clamber, Secret Gate and its segments.
  • The Torch Lever is not disguised. It looks the same, with no outline.
  • A secret block has no outline while a piston is moving it.

Only you see this view. Other players see the blocks as usual.

Switching the view

  • Press B while you wear them to switch the view off and on. "Builder's view off" or "Builder's view on" shows above the hotbar.
  • The key is "Builder's Goggles view on/off", under "Secret Blocks" in Controls. You can change it there.
  • The key does nothing while you are not wearing them.
  • Putting them on, or joining a world while wearing them, always starts with the view on.

Shader packs

Under a shader pack (Iris), the faded block shows as a light glass ghost instead. The outline and the real block inside look the same. See Compatibility.

Camouflage Wand

As you see it Through the Builder's Goggles
The Camouflage Wand turns a chest in a wall into a Secret Chest that looks like the wall The Camouflage Wand turns a chest in a wall into a Secret Chest that looks like the wall, through the Builder's Goggles

A building tool that turns a vanilla block into its secret version in place, and turns a secret block back.

Getting it

It has no recipe and is not found in chests. Take it from the Secret Blocks tab of the creative inventory, or use:

/give @p secretblocks:camouflage_wand

Only players in creative mode, or operators, can use it. In adventure mode it can load a look but not convert. Anyone else gets the message "The Camouflage Wand works in creative mode or for operators", and nothing happens.

Loading a look

  • Sneak and use the wand on any block. It loads that block as its disguise.
  • On a secret block, it loads the block shown on the face you clicked.
  • "Loaded …" shows above the hotbar, and the wand's tooltip names the loaded block.
  • An empty wand's tooltip says "Sneak + use on a block to load it".
  • A face that shows no block cannot be loaded.

Converting blocks

  • Use the wand, without sneaking, on a vanilla block that has a secret version. It becomes that secret block, with the loaded look on every face.
  • Use it on a secret block that has a vanilla version, and it turns back.
  • "Now …" shows above the hotbar with the new block's name.
  • It works on chests, doors and levers without opening or flipping them.
  • An empty wand can turn secret blocks back, but cannot make new ones.

Converting keeps:

  • the block's state: which way it faces, open or closed, on or off, a repeater's delay, a door's hinge, and so on;
  • both halves of a door;
  • everything inside a chest, trapped chest, dispenser, dropper or hopper, slot for slot. Nothing drops and nothing is doubled;
  • a container's custom name and lock;
  • the exact vanilla block. A spruce door or stone brick stairs made secret with the wand come back as a spruce door or stone brick stairs.

Some things are not kept:

  • A secret block made in a crafting grid turns back into the usual vanilla block, such as an oak door.
  • A chest turned back always faces north.
  • The disguise is removed when a block turns back.

A pressed button or a pressure plate in use releases normally after converting. Redstone Dust made from a secret block joins up with the wire around it.

The Secret Redstone Wire turns back into Redstone Dust. Redstone Dust always becomes Secret Redstone Dust.

What it refuses

Each of these shows a message above the hotbar, and nothing changes:

  • a block with no secret or vanilla version, such as stone, the Dummy Block, the Ghost Block, One Way Glass, the Secret Clamber or the Secret Gate;
  • a double chest;
  • a chest, dispenser, dropper or hopper whose loot has not been generated yet (open it once first);
  • a piston that is pushed out (retract it first);
  • a door missing its other half;
  • an empty wand, when making a secret block;
  • a block too far away;
  • a place where you may not build, such as spawn protection or adventure mode;
  • a player who is not in creative mode and not an operator.
