Backups and Undo
Instant Edit writes into your real Penumbra mods, so it's good to know how to get an older version back. Each kind of edit has its own safety net.
| Edit | Safety net | How to go back |
|---|---|---|
| Models (Quick Export) | Optional backups, turned on in Blender | Blender Backups panel: import or restore |
| Textures | A backup before every save | Sessions tab: the clock button restores the previous version |
| Substance Painter | Same as textures | Undo in Painter and send again, or restore in Sessions |
| Animations | Every edit journaled for 7 days | Undo last edit, or the Recent edits tab |
| Neck seam | Backups kept for a week, plus the preview step | Discard preview before applying |
Model backups are off until you turn them on.
- In Blender's sidebar, find the Backups panel.
- Tick the box in its header. From now on, every export that replaces a model first keeps a timestamped copy.
- The panel lists the backups of the current export target, grouped by file, newest first. For each one:
- Import loads it into the scene, so you can compare or copy parts from it.
- Restore puts it back over the current file.
- Delete All Backups... removes them.
Restoring a Quick Export backup of hair also restores the hair skeleton (EST) entries that export set.
Backups start once Quick Export has created the mod. Quick Export backups are kept for 7 days, then the cache cleanup removes them. To keep a version for longer, import it and save the .blend, or copy the file somewhere else.
Every texture save keeps a backup of the file it replaces. To go back:
- Open the Sessions tab and find the texture's card.
- Press the clock button. It restores the previously saved texture (or the original, if you've only saved once), then pauses the session so your next save doesn't overwrite it straight away.
- Your working TGA stays as it is. Press the play button to start reacting to saves again.
Discarding a session only deletes its working files: the mod and its backups are kept.
See Editing animations. In short: Undo last edit reverts the last bake, repair or bone removal and puts back the LivePose offsets it cleared. Recent edits has older edits, and flags edits that were interrupted (for example by a game crash) so you can undo them after a restart.
See Fixing the neck seam. Nothing touches your mods until you press Apply to my mods, and the files it replaces are backed up for a week.
